We were in Ojai, California, a small resort town, for a 4th of July weekend getaway. Azu is one of the limited options for good food so we decided to try it. Eureka!
We were there for lunch. It was a hot day. We had our family dog with us so we had to sit at one of the sidewalk tables. (Several Ojai restaurants are dog-friendly, which is important to many people.) The July temperature led us to focus on a variety of their tapas selections. It was a good decision for a hot day.
The tapas dishes at Azu definitely have a California touch. That is, they are tasty and light. The Gambas--sauteed prawns in olive oil, white wine and garlic--were delicious. So were the Seared Sea Scallops. The Chile Relleno was stuffed with spinach, pine nuts, currants, a Mexican cheese and a spicy tomato sauce and it was one of the best we've ever had. Even the lowly hummus & pita and the house salad were light and delicious. The wines we chose went well with the food on the table.
Azu puts its effort into the food instead of decor, and the customers benefit. We will definitely be repeat customers.
