Simple and serene

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jun 15, 2016
Pepper Tree Retreat is a perfect inn for an Ojai retreat. The property is nested on a quiet country road near but not in the town. Bird song awakens you in the morning. Paths leading out of the gardens into the far reaches of the property invite you outside and into the surrounding vistas. The rooms themselves are kept in the old-fashioned California bungalow style of early 20th century inns, and are quaint but comfortable and very well maintained by the conscientious staff. The staff is also very welcoming and promptly responsive to any needs or requests.
Date of stay: June 2016
Room Tip: We loved the Lennon room for its views and wide, private veranda.

Thank you for your recent stay, we are delighted to see you have enjoyed it. The Lennon is a very special room indeed, the private outdoor space is wonderful for a late afternoon cup of tea, early morning meditation, late night star gazing...
We look forward to your next retreat.

I have been staying here for years. It is peaceful and has lovely grounds. It is a B&B but they are not allowed to cook there (kitchen not certifiable) so breakfast is brought in and not as terrific as a regular B&B. But the serenity of the setting, the people you meet at breakfast, and the sense of getting away from it all makes it lovely. The inn is old but the rooms are well maintained and clean. I have brought friends to the Pepper Tree and some love it and some would prefer something like the Ojai Valley Inn. Be aware that this is truly a vegetarian site and there is no cooking even of fish in a room with a kitchen.

Room tip: I love staying in the Lawrence cottage with a small kitchen.

Thank you, we are always delighted to have you as our guest. We have done a lot of work at the retreat this past 12 months but have made sure to keep the home's authentic charm. The retreat main house is over 104 years old now and still gracefully welcoming guests through it's doors each day. Looking forward to your next stay with us.

The Chaplin House, Herb Gardens, Orange Groves, Krishnamurti Library, Krishnamurti Center, Yoga Pavilion and amicable staff are just a few of the highlights that shall make me go here again and again. Tranquil place to go solo or with family.

Have been staying at the Pepper Tree Retreat for over 10 years now. All the rooms are wonderful, no matter where you stay it is always quiet and peaceful. The rooms are comfortable and clean, some have a full kitchen. Perfect location, I have always been fond of Krishnamurti's writings and delight in "just being" while I am there!

This is the historic home of a spiritual leader who influenced such people as John Lennon, Charlie Chaplin and Aldous Huxley. As a historic home, this is an old building that is lovingly decorated with a simple charm that is becoming of a retreat. We stayed in the Lawrence room which is a comfortable room with full kitchen. I loved the skylight above the bed which lets you look up at the stars as you lie in bed at night! Stayed here twice and enjoyed our stay both times. The air, the orange groves, and the mountain views seems to help clear the cobwebs of the mind - freeing the mind to think and breath clearly! We came away feeling rested and inspired.

The coffee, the selection of teas and the breakfast were wonderful (healthy choices), and an opportunity to meet the other guests.

Not too long ago I asked one of my co-workers who complained about how his stocks were losing value, "why don't you invest in something of real value?". He said " what?"
"Invest in your health, mind and body"I said. Pepper Tree Retreat to me is not only an experience of peace & quiet life but an investment in health. I stayed at the Lawrence Suite( named after DH Lawrence)early this February and for the first time slept in moonlight.(steaming through the skylight). It was such a spectacular night I wanted to be back again. So we spent 4 days in the Lawrence Suite in March. The trees, fragrance of Orange blossoms, the cool weather, tranquility and the wonderful people who work there and the guests we met all make Pepper Tree a wonderful place, a jewel in Ojai valley.

Room tip: Lawrence Suite has a skylight and a small kitchen for your vegetarian lunch and dinner.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. This is indeed a unique property, we are just a few minutes from town yet it feels like another world. All seasons have their particular draw in Ojai, winter time can be especially beautiful with comfortable days and colder nights. It is a perfect time for daytime walks perhaps followed by relaxing evenings enjoying the surrounding silence, reading a good book in your room or taking part in engaging conversation with other guests over a cup of tea.
We look forward to seeing you again for your next retreat.
Julien
