“Great place for a real retreat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 30, 2011

This place is in the nature circa 4 miles away from downtown Ojai, adjacent to the Krishnamurti center. Very cozy bed & breakfast, the rooms are nice & clean, the people who work there are very friendly, the surroundings beautiful with gardens and orange groves. The area is super-quiet and the B&B doesn't allow for kids or pets or loud noises etc - literally like a retreat! There are plenty of Krishnamurti books on the shelves, WiFi access (and a shared terminal for the ones who don't carry a laptop), easy parking, walking access to the Krishnamurti center (that offers more books and meditation sessions etc) and also walking distance to the trailhead of a nice hike. We found this place almost accidentally (we weren't after Krishnamurti or anything like this, simply looking for a quiet place to escape the city for a couple of days) and we really enjoyed it, you can really switch off over there. Compared to other places it is far from the town center so it won't work if you want walking distance to the shops etc. If on the other hand you want to retreat then this place is perfect, it tops my list of such places within 1-2 hours from LA.

Each time I go to the Pepper Tree Retreat I'm impressed with the staff's total commitment to guests having the experience they came for. In my case, I go for spiritual renewal through inner connection. The teachings of Krishnamurti, being surrounded by exquisite natural beauty, the caring and attentive staff and the comfort of the rooms provide the safe cocoon for inner exploration.

From the moment I arrived at Peppertree, I experienced a sense of peace and tranquility. Our room was ready for our inspection and everything looked wonderful. After a bit, we met the caretaker, who was very gracious. She gave us a tour and made us feel at home. The beds were very comfortable and the views were exceptional--exactly what we expected! We loved the location and the grounds were beautifully kept up. Lots of lush trees and plants everywhere---not to mention all the orange trees! The breakfast was nice. We are vegans and they made sure, without our asking, that we had enough vegan options to satisfy our hunger in the morning. They provided us with (organic) Almond milk and muesli and lots of tea and purified water. Fruit was always available. To top things off, we found a few excellent restaurants nearby that served vegan food. Our favorite was, The Farmer and the Cook - (but that is another review!)
I liked having access to all the reading material, central heat, sitting rooms, plenty of outdoor seating, friendly staff and interesting visitors to the B&B/retreat. We enjoyed hiking and sightseeing. There is nothing to dislike about Peppertree Retreat. It helps that we knew who Krishnamurti was and that there were like-minded people there. Lovely town, Ojai. So grateful to have found this place.

I get away from from the hustle and bustle every day way of life to reflect myself and i found that Pepper tree retreat is a great place for me to do so. Here i am brought down to the peace and simplicity of nature of things so i am able to take a stroll among the natural settings and relax in my own thoughts. There is no Tv in the room but you can get wireless internet thought. It is secluded enough to have peace and quiet but you can also take a 10 minutes drive to downtown Ojai for restaurants and shops. Pepper Tree is beautiful , simple and rustic in its ways. You will be able to be who you are around the natural setting of this place.

I have stayed at Peppertree once for a retreat and twice for private overnight visits. The staff is very welcoming and helpful. The grounds are surrounded by orange groves and natural landscaping, perfect for relaxing. It is an older property rich with charm, well maintained with some updates, and has always been clean and comfortable when I've been there. I also like that there are a variety of rooms to choose from, as shown on their website, and manager Elizabeth is happy to answer any questions to help decide which room is best for your needs. Some have kitchenettes, balconies, separate rooms, larger bathrooms, etc. Breakfast is also included, and they are willing to accommodate special diets (such as gluten-free).

We can't wait to return to this peaceful retreat from the everyday rush of the world. It took only minutes to slow down and relax. There is a sweet calm that pervades every corner of the property.

Pepper Tree is one I'd like to keep for myself but, self interest aside, I can recommend this B&B wholeheartedly. It is a few miles outside of Ojai and the benefit to that is that it's peaceful and quiet, but it also requires that one do some planning for the day to avoid trips back and forth. Situated in the hills with an orange grove in back it is a lovely, graceful and well maintained property. The Bohm room was sunny, clean and ideal for two friends traveling together. The staff is friendly and very knowledgable about the history of the property. This is on my very short list of places to return to whenever the opportunity arises.
