Our stay at the Best Western Oceanside Inn easily qualifies as the second worst hotel stay we have ever experienced. Second only to a one night stay at a no-name place in Northern New York. Unfortunately, we were subjected to the Best Western Oceanside Inn for eight days, not just one.

The Bad:
Unfriendly and uncaring front desk staff – with the exception of a wonderful young lady everyone at the front desk else would qualify for the “Mr. Personality Award” – stoic, unfriendly, not helpful.
Toilet that would not flush properly – keeping the handle down and flushing at least twice would be the only way to make that thing do its thing.
The “patio” – the sliding glass doors lead right into the parking lot. No separation, nothing. Forces you to keep the curtains drawn at all times. At night there is a spot light on, right in the center of each “patio” – even the curtains do not keep that light completely from coming into the room.
Construction noise – the place was being painted. With the exception of Sunday, we heard construction noise – drilling, grinding, and yelling of the crew – starting as early as 6 a.m. (Yes – that is 6 o’clock in the morning) right outside our “patio”. They went as far as starting to install masking tape on the sliding glass door of our room at 6:20 a.m. – until our very annoyed phone call to the front desk.
For the painting of the pool fence they removed the posted pool rules. Days later they had not been reinstalled – we have a photograph of the rules lying on the floor. Very safe!
The beds – the mattresses suck, but nice pillows.

The Bizarre:
If you want one of their very crappy pool towels you must appear personally at the front desk, where they keep a three-ring binder. Your towel “rental” is then recorded in the three-ring binder. Upon completion of your pool or hot tub stay they require you to return the towels to the front desk. Any other hotel we have ever stayed at would have a shelf or box with clean towels in the pool area and a box to return them, or have them picked up by housekeeping when they clean the room.
Returning to our favorite “patio”: On two separate occasions the hotel’s owner or manager decided to have his car washed within three or four feet from our sliding glass doors. Yes, we have photographs of that one, too– this is just ridiculous.
The breakfast hours – the hotel actually offers a very nice breakfast – fresh waffles, eggs, sausage, fruit, cereal, yogurt, and more. Except, if you want to take advantage of it you need to be there prior to 9 a.m. (no problem because the construction crew starts throwing you out of bed at 6 a.m.!) – so for families on vacation there is no sleeping in.

Needless to say we won’t return. There are some very nice hotels in Oceanside we have stayed at. This one is not one of them.

Reservations were made several months in advance and a quiet room, facing the courtyard, on the upper floor, was requested. Neither of these requests were honored initially, though an upper floor facing the adjoining street was located. While the room was nicely appointed and clean, the AC was temperamental and the noise from the parking lot, hallway, and street made sleep very difficult. Moreover, at check in I was informed that food from the breakfast could not be taken to the room (I've never been told that before in over 24 years of business travel) and I couldn't even take a cup of coffee with me on my drive to work, as no lids were available- that was a first as well. The breakfast was OK, aside from the "hot" items (scrambled eggs and sausage) being, respectively, cold and barely warm. I left with an impression that this was a budget hotel that was needing to economize in every way possible, even at the expense of their tenants comfort, and requests by customers were irrelevant. I won't stay there again.

We stayed three nights here and did not know the property was undergoing renovations. The room had been recently painted, etc. but the renovations were not fully complete. We check in and went out for dinner, when we came back they had entered our room when we were out and changed out the lamps - a little creepy and they didn't bother to put the furniture they moved out from the wall back in place. We were also very disappointed to find the pool closed the one free afternoon we had and the one afternoon the sun was shining! Breakfast is your standard mill of the run BW continental breakfast but I didn't appreciate the SOUR milk! I also didn't appreciate the 12 long black hairs I found in my towel when drying off the first morning. Also NO inroom safe - I don't understand how this hotel could be doing renovations and didn't bother to add safes in the rooms. By the way this hotel is not near the beach at all, so if you want somewhere that is in walking distance to the beach this isn't the place.

We didn't find this Best Western to be any better or worse than other Best Westerns we've stayed at, and Best Western is our usual hotel chain so we're very familiar with them. The breakfast is typical for BW, powdered eggs, reheated sausage, make your own waffles, oatmeal and cereal. We like it because its better than continental breakfasts at other hotel chains, even if its not fancy or spectacular. We did like the hotel atmosphere with the palm trees around the pool. We enjoyed the pool and hot tub and used them daily during our stay. All in all it was an average BW and we would definitely stay here again.

The hotel was a good value for the price we paid. During my stay the hotel was being painted and a lot of work was being done to improve the hotel. Our A/C stopped working and we had to get the maintenance guy to reset it to get it working again. I did notice they were replacing some of the AC units also during our stay. Should be an even better value when all the upgrades are completed.
