There are a ton of options to choose from when looking for authentic Cali-Mex, and we have our favorites, but we decided to give Bull Taco (Oceanside location) a shot - a nice departure from the usual.
PROS: Service is straightforward - head up to the counter, take a peek upwards at the chalkboards or glance at the tri-fold menu. There is no formal service - just order and it'll be delivered to your table which is adorned with pillows and cushions on one side and modern chairs on the other. There is a bar that overlooks the kitchen area and salsa bar.
The menu, at first glance, seemed repetitive between the burritos, quesadillas, tacos, and street tacos, however, giving it a closer look, we realized one can get the same favorites in different styles. We opted for the Asada Tater Tots, Shrimp Curry, and Lobster, Bacon, and Chorizo street tacos. The Asada Tater Tots don't mess around. It's a heaping pile of tater tots adorned with fresh cheddar, jalapeños, sour cream, homemade salsa, onions, cilantro, and guacamole. If you're daring enough, grab a cup of habanero salsa from the bar - it'll knock your socks off! We felt that the ratio of asada to the other ingredients was a bit unbalanced, however, it was still a delightful and filling appetizer. The Shrimp Curry and Lobster, Bacon, and Chorizo tacos were equally good, but again, a little short on the main ingredients. Each held its level of spiciness quite nicely and the corn tortillas provided the perfect blanket for the unorthodox tacos.
Prices did seem a bit high, but it did not negatively affect the value of what we ordered. Besides, the size of the burritos more than made up for it.
Bull Taco offers breakfast in addition to lunch and dinner and it appeared that the burritos were not for the faint of heart: they were GRANDE in size!
There is a fascinating, grass-roots surfboard shop that can be accessed right through the restaurant which will satisfy any post-sesh craving or to experience a taste of surfing life in North County.
Bull Taco Oceanside does serve alcoholic beverages, including wine. It's original location is in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, just south of Oceanside, but you can't go wrong visiting either. Bull Taco has stamped its presence in North County ... much like a surfing contest, Bull Taco is the dark horse of Cali-Mex cuisine.
