Hello, we stayed overnight at one of the Union Hotels rental homes and had a wonderful time in Occidental. The meals at the Union Hotel were hearty and delicious.
My partner had a salad homemade dressing, soup and the bruschetta while I had a clam chowder and the spaghetti with the biggest meatball I've ever had.
Awesome!

Union hotel once again never let's us down. Had such a great meal and the service wonderful! I think we rolled out of the place. We took as much food home with us as we ate. Thank you for the wonderful memories and scrumptious food. We will be back often. Thanks , Julia

After an in-depth venue search throughout Sonoma County for our September 2013 wedding, we were a bit discouraged. Prices reflected that celebrating in “wine country” costs a pretty penny. As we were driving through Occidental, we noticed a sign for the Union Hotel’s picnic area. We called Union Hotel on a Sunday morning and spoke with Barbara. The picnic area we originally called about was unavailable, but Barbara mentioned The Grove, a redwood grove on their property with an amphitheater and gorgeous rental house. We were interested in seeing the property, so Barbara invited us down to the Union Hotel for a tasting of the reception menu and to check out The Grove and guesthouses available for rent.

As soon as we laid eyes on The Grove, we were in love. It was exactly what we were looking for – rustic-chic, classic Sonoma County. The guesthouse on the property, aptly named The Lodge – is something you would ooh and ah over in a magazine. It is absolutely stunning with stone floors, fireplaces and stairs, exposed beam ceilings, fully stocked gourmet kitchen, 2nd story balconies, pool and hot tub, lovely courtyards, and wonderful homey touches throughout. Also on the property, just steps away from The Lodge, is a quaint one bedroom Bungalow, the perfect cozy spot for two.

We checked in to The Lodge and Bungalow on Thursday. We had four adults staying at The Lodge, while my fiancé and I had the Bungalow. Since The Grove is on the same property, we were able to start decorating The Grove Friday. Nearly all of the personal touches throughout the ceremony and reception were hand made, so having access to the ceremony site before and after the wedding day was a huge plus since we were decorating everything ourselves. We had an intimate rehearsal dinner Friday night poolside at The Lodge, serving up a variety of pizzas and salads from Union Hotel. The ceremony and cocktail reception was held Saturday afternoon in The Grove, followed by dinner and dancing in the Bocce Ballroom of Union Hotel. We took down everything Sunday and checked out later that afternoon.

The venues we used – The Lodge, The Grove, and Bocce Ballroom of Union Hotel – perfectly suited our personalities and wedding day vision. However, the service we received from the Barbara (the owner) and her wonderful staff was above and beyond exceptional. Barbara was very attentive to emails the months leading up to the wedding. We met with the Barbara and the two waitresses working our reception the day before the wedding. The team obviously has extensive experience with large groups, and was able to answer all of our questions and offer suggestions.

While Union Hotel serves local champagne Korbel Brut, we really wanted to serve our favorite champagne, Korbel Rouge. Barbara was able to bring in a case of Korbel Rouge for our big day. In addition to some traditional beers, we loved that they also served locally made house chardonnay and cabernet, and local brew Lagunitas. A light cocktail reception immediately followed the ceremony at The Grove. The mini-pizzas served were a hit with out guests, and everyone loved being outdoors, mingling amongst the redwoods.

The reception featured a local mixed green salad, fresh bruschetta, house special ravioli, pasta pomodoro, roasted chicken, and roasted root veggies. Every dish was delicious, just as one comes to expect from Union Hotel. One of our concerns regarding cost with the reception was open alcohol going to waste. The wait staff did a phenomenal job keeping waste to a minimum – so much so that we didn’t see any ½ consumed bottles sitting around. They were very in tune to the guests’ needs and would remove bottles from tables not indulging, and worked them into rotation at the bar. We also liked the fact that while we only served beer and wine, guests could purchase stiffer drinks at the Saloon, which offers a full bar menu. Dinner was served family style, which we loved. We didn’t have those long buffet lines, and it really had that down home vibe. The dishes made their way from the kitchen to guest tables seamlessly. Everything was so well handled, that as the bride, I had nothing to do or worry about on my wedding day except having a great time and enjoying our guests.

You can have a great venue, but if the service is sub-par, the entire experience can be affected. We were fortunate to not only have a fabulous venue, but top-notch service from our initial call through un-decorating the ballroom. Throughout the wedding weekend, Barbara and her staff were so gracious and attentive, that our families and guests could feel the warmth of this local gem. We were so happy to offer our guests a real taste of Sonoma County, from the local dishes and drinks, to the charms of a century-old landmark, to the magic of the redwoods, we couldn’t have dreamed of a better place to share our big day.

We had just completed our zip lining adventure and asked our guides for a unique place to have lunch. They both highly recommended The Union Hotel. We were treated to a tasty lunch served by very friendly people. We didn't feel like first-timers at all. I asked our waitress if there were any good places to see the ocean in the area. She took her time and detailed a shortcut to the coast and US 1. After a ride along a scenic country road, we reached a post card vista. All in all, a really great day! Tha
