Occidental itself is a tiny but very nice village to stay. We can recommend the Occidental Hotel. We had a very spacious room with 2 queens at reasonable price. Opposite the hotel is a very nice restaurant/bakery for having breakfast or lunch. For dinner you can walk to one of the (3?) restaurants in the village.
A very peaceful place!

This is the only "reasonably" priced hotel in Occidental-so we stayed for one night. It's pathetic! From the grouchy clerk-we asked for a "quiet" room to the shabby decor-this isn't worth it. Our quiet room was in the middle of two others, and on the bottom floor. Due to old construction-you could hear everything! It sounded like a herd of elephants on the floor above-and when the fan was on it sounded like a jet engine. It's dated-and not kept up. A few miles down the road (in Sebastapol) we spotted a sparkling Holiday Inn Express. You can have an Italian dinner in Occidental, and then a quick drive will take you this better option. Do it!

My girlfriend and I just returned from a fantastic long weekend in the quaint town of Occidental. We have stayed at the Occidental Lodge four times now and it has yet to disappoint! With the beaches and wineries close by, Occidental is the ideal place to stay. The Lodge is clean, quiet and the staff has always been friendly. If you are looking for a great Italian meal in town, you must visit Negri's. We will certainly be back next year.

We booked advising Occidental staff via phone that there would be 5 of us in the room for 2 nights, and they quoted a price. Upon check in they saw us, and there was no problem with the amount of us checking in. The staff said nothing as we piled out of our cars in plain view of the lodge office, unpacked and settled in our rooms (1 with 2 queen size beds the other with 1 king and 1 queen).
The following day, after maid service complained that there were "extra" blankets/bedding on the room floor etc, management left a note on the door to report to the office. They then said that the agreement was only for 2 guests per room and that we had to pay an additional $8 per guest over 2 per room-- even though they had documented proof of the arrangement and price quoted for 5. Needless to say, Occidental is a small town with limited services, and following an unpleasant and threatening phone call from the less than professional motel owner, I relented and paid the extortion to salvage what was left of our "joyous weekend" together.
Lastly, the rooms and maid service were not up to par. I find it hard to believe that this is a AAA rated facility. If this is what AAA calls a quality establishment, then the AAA standards are no longer going to be the standards I trust when seeking reputable lodging. The continued monopolistic and less that standard treatment of out-of-town guests in this fashion can only jeopardize the tourist trade that Occidental appears to be interested in maintaining.

They overcharged our credit card without telling us. When we called to inquire about the charges they were rude and even hung up on us!! Simply a reflection of a dishonest establishment.

My husband and I stay at this motel several times a year, it's our base to go spend time at the Ocean, which we love. It is always clean and quiet. There is a small fridge in the room, but no microwave. The coffee cups are real cups, not those plastic things. (For some reason, I am impressed by this gesture) The people who work there are very nice and helpful. One time the power went out during a storm and someone came to our door with a flashlight for us. The place is not fancy, but it's friendly and cozy.
Occidental is very close to the Pacific Ocean, and the Russian River area. There are several wonderful dinner restaurants, with local bars attached, within just a block or so, be careful not to overeat and hurt yourselves LOL. Several excellent breakfast places, and small artisan shops, and two small grocery stores, one with a deli, for great sandwiches to take to the beach.
We love Occidental, the price is right, good food, good motel, really close to Bodega Bay, and beautiful at night when the fog comes in...
Some local characters appear "colorful", but this is a very safe place to get away, enjoy some quiet, with only a 15-20 min. drive to the nearest beaches.

Bodega Bay is 5-10 minutes and about 12 miles drive away from Occidental. This is the best place and probably the only place to stay within 25 miles of Bodega Bay that is affordable, from $55-95 a night depending on the off or on season, yet nice, meeting the standards of a Red Roof Inn (like an upgraded Motel 6 or 2.5 star motel) with a Best Western being a 3 star and a Hilton being a 4 star. The other motels/hotels/inns in Occidental, which aren't many-like 5- are either real dumpy or super expensive, having explored all the choices within this town, this motel is definitely your best choice if you're not one who's willing to go to a dumpy 1 star motel and can't afford $200 a night.

This place is DOG FRIENDLY and doesn't charge for your pet, which was my main reason for staying here. The rooms are big, clean, spacious and airy. The motel is an outdoor motel. There are frigs in the rooms but no microwaves, you have to go to the front lobby for that. The TV is big and offers local and cable-tv channels but no HBO or Showtime channels. The beds are big, cozy and comfortable and the shower, bathroom and decor was nice. From the outside, I was worried and didn't know what to expect, but was very relieved once I got inside because it was much better than I had thought it would be, being out in the wilderness and all. There is also an outdoor pool and very friendly staff. No one answers the phone at night, so make reservations during the day and don't worry, they still take people in as long as there is vacancy, just ring the doorbell, they just don't answer the phone past a certain time.

The town itself is a block long with the residential area surrounding this block of a few stores and even fewer restaurants, which is all walking distance to this motel that is up a small hill. Directly across the motel is Howards Cafe that sells great breakfast. The nearest "real" city is Sebastopol, which is about a 15 mile drive east more. Occidental is real small town that doesn't even have its own gas station, so gas up befor you hit this town. Everything west of Occidental, which is Bodega Bay, don't offer much business and if they do they close real early, restaurants at 3pm-don't know about the on season though, just speaking from my experience.

This motel is recommended for the budget traveler or those who travel with their pet like me.
