Owner description: Cultivated with passion and a singular vision, Opus One produces one ultra-premium Bordeaux blend a year. A collaboration between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Opus One arose out of passion. And beginning with the first harvest in 1979, every vintage of Opus One has expressed the vision and passionate spirit of its founders. Our goal is to create a wine of ultimate quality that reflects the traditions and innovations of both founders. Visiting the winery is by appointment only.

“Complex Wine, Beautiful Surroundings, Simple Pour”

You go to Opus to taste the wine, look out from the terrace, and enjoy the quiet, simple elegance of the property. Yes, it costs $40 per taste. Yes, that is expensive. Combining all of the other factors makes it all worthwhile. No steel tanks, no lectures, no explanations, just peace and quiet and a great glass of wine.

“Would not recommend. Wine was good but way over priced.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 29, 2013 via mobile

We had reservations for a group of 10. When arrived at the vineyard to check in for our reservation, they were not friendly. We were directed to a small room where we received our $40 a glass wine and was directed to go up stairs to enjoy the view. The view was lovely. However, we were expecting much, much more. Are impression that there would be someone up there to talk to us about the wine and the vinyard. No, not all. We got cement tables with the view. Very disappointed.
Would never go back let alone recommend it. The people working there were very haughty and arrogant. It was a waste of our time and $40.

Worth the experience. Great views. Complex wine. Wonderful atmosphere with classical music playing in the background.

“Sterile”

The wine as always is excellent but as can be expected of Opus One - I thought that the 2009 vintage they are currently pouring could use another year or two (strictly my personal opinion) and yes, the $40 that they charge for basically 2 ounces is steep.

I went to Opus One to take a friend who has never been there before - him and his family are big fans of Opus One. It is worth the visit if you know the wine and have never been to the winery. It's like meeting someone for the first time in person, whom you've been speaking to over the phone regularly..."great to have a face to go with the voice" type of thing.

The experience is very matter-of-fact..not much fanfare. If you have reservations, you check in with the host and she'll verify that you are on the list. Then she'll direct you to the Partners' Room where you pay and get your glass of wine. You are then told which areas are accessible, mainly the second floor terrace where you can leisurely sip your wine.

The winery is very modern, immaculately clean - and offers a very inviting view of the vineyards. One can certainly just hang out up stairs and savor the moment!
