“Quantity Over Quality”
Reviewed July 6, 2013

Their Sushi was just about OK but who can complain when the restaurant has a ‘bottomless sake’ policy. Throughout the duration of our visit the owner ensured our glass never ran empty. Great thing for me, not for 2 of my companions though who got quite tipsy on the never ending alcohol! Go if you’re in the mood to drink and are on a budget.

“Lake Merritt's best sushi”
Reviewed April 22, 2012

Coach is a baseball coach. And when Coach is not coaching baseball, he is greeting every guest at his tiny lakefront restaurant, filling their saki box or saying goodbye to every patron that leaves the place. He is the ebullient face of a happy place, packed almost every night with lovers of fresh Japanese food. They have distinctive specials, we love the "Snow White" a sushi with fresh dungeness crab. If you order the bottomless saki box - recommended- for $3.50, you are presented a pine box, shown the proper blessing, and then turned loose to color your box with distinctive patterns. There are hundreds of boxes lining the walls, and regular patrons like us re-use their boxes over and over again.

“Honestly, the food here...”
Reviewed September 19, 2008

Honestly, the food here is not all that. I can get this caliber sushi at a lot of other sushi bars. But two thumbs way up for the service. The owner and his wife really make sure you are enjoying your meal and enjoying your time at their restaurant. They make you feel right at home.

Two more thumbs way up (quick, let me borrow your thumbs) for the bottom-less sake you get if you order the sake box. First you get a small square wooden box (instead of a cup cuz that's the way sake should be drunk). Then he fills it to the rim and gives you a small plate of salt. You are supposed to put a dash of salt on the rim and drink your sake with the salt. Every so often he would come back and refill your box to the rim again. My fiance and his dad each had a box and never during our meal were their boxes allowed to go pass a quarter empty. It's almost a sin if it does. They ended up drinking so much that after dinner we made a point to walk around Lake Merritt for a little bit to let the driver sober up enough to drive. And all this sake only cost $3.50 per person. Bottomless sake for $3.50, that's a drinker's heaven.

Another interesting thing about this restaurant is that they keep the box you used for the sake and display it on a wall full of other sake boxes of other customers. You get to write your name on it and draw whatever you wish to decorate it. It goes on the wall of sake boxes when you leave. When you come back next time, they take your box from the wall and serve you your next sake in the same box you used last time. In essence, you take ownership of this one sake box in this restaurant. Pretty cool little gimmick to build/keep your loyalty with this humble little local sushi bar.
