Spent 5 nights attending a conference at this hotel.

THE GOOD
We got a very good conference rate ($159 per night plus tax including Internet).

Room had plenty of space, beds were comfy, and it was quiet. Extra reading lights in addition to usual lamp were a nice touch. Staff were very nice, would often escort you outside to show you how to get to where you were going.

For those who want to "escape" their conference or the hotel for a short while or need to prepare for your meeting, you can find the post office, FedEx (12 cents a black and white copy), a discount grocery store (across the street), couple of drugstores, a used bookstore run by the public library (bought 3 mysteries for $12), day spas, independent game store (bought board games for grandsons), and several restaurants within a couple of blocks. Particularly enjoyed the nearby Thai restaurant (brown rice was an option)--try the warm tapioca and banana pudding.

The BART is literally right across the street so save yourself some $ and take the BART from the SFO airport. Only $8.50 one way.

THE BAD
Food is indeed very expensive at the hotel (e.g., $6.95 for a side of fruit at breakfast; $106 for a gallon of hot water/tea for meeting planners), the ballroom was echoey, microphones were missing from some of the session rooms, and electric outlets are missing next to the tables and chairs located in the lobby area near the ATM machine. Police officers and independent security officers were clearly visible when walking around the area, but, did not receive warnings of where not to travel from hotel staff--unsure whether there was need for concern.

OVERALL
Several of us were pleasantly surprised with Oakland, and remarked positively on the service and our experience at this hotel.

The hotel seems to have gone through some remodeling and is still in the process i looks like. The room I was in was nice, seemed upgraded with comfy beds. Flat screen TV, mini fridge, big desk, nice fluffy comforter on the bed. Location is right downtown, great for conventions or business meetings. Overall a good hotel.

I stayed here four nights while taking the bar exam. The bed in my king room was one of the most comfortable hotel beds I've slept on. The room was comfortable and well-furnished. It had a desk and rolling office chair, as well as an upholstered armchair, perfect for last-minute studying and/or post-exam television watching and relaxation. The lighting in the room was good, and there were plentiful outlets for plugging in gadgets. The room also had a refrigerator for keeping meals cold (the hotel set up a microwave for exam-takers to use on the second floor).

I stayed on the sixth floor. The elevators were generally fast. One minor complaint I had was that you could hear and feel people opening/closing doors and occasionally walking? falling? dropping luggage? upstairs because those actions would shake the walls. Also, I could hear the water going through the plumbing in the bathroom whenever someone else was taking a shower. And finally, for some reason, the shower controls broke the morning of my check-out, so the only water temperatures I got were hot and scalding hot. The shower had worked fine the rest of the time.

I felt that the nightly rates were a little expensive for the area, even though we had a special group rate. Also, the attached parking garage is ridiculously expensive ($24/day), but still better than valet ($33/day). Can't really fault them for trying to make a profit, I guess.

As for location, I can't complain. I needed to be in the convention center, and all I had to do each morning was go downstairs and around the corner (indoors). Oakland City Center is two blocks away for quick meals. Walgreens is close by, and Smart & Final (a grocery store) is right across the street if you want some drinks or food and don't want to pay Marriott prices. Lots of restaurants are around too, including Battambang, a nice little Cambodian place I tried after my exam.

Overall, a nice place to stay if you need to be in the area. You could do a lot worse.

I stayed at this hotel during a business meeting. The room was very comfortable and clean. Room service was fast and the food was ok...not excellent but ok. Typical hotel food. I had a gorgeous window with a lovely view. It is very convenient to the BART and the drive to the airport is a fast trip.

I won't give it a full 5 just because I didn't like the concierge service went I went to get change to use the laundry room. One person seemed interested and willing to help, the other was just matter of factly, we are out of quarters. I was waiting to hear when they'd get more. Didn't happen. But still, it was a good stay.

This hotel wasn't quite up to the same standards as most Marriotts. The furniture in the room was a bit shabby, except for the bed, which thankfully had Marriott's wonderful linens and lots of fluffy pillows. The TV and lamp were both plugged into the same extension cord, which ran across one wall. The lobby also felt in need of a facelift.
Staff were hit and miss... Some were customer service stars, but one of the women at the front desk chastised me for demagnetizing my key instead of just helping me get in my room.
However everything was clean, the room was reasonably large and the bed was great.

On my last business trip to Hayward CA, I decided to try the downtown Oakland Marriott. The hotel is attached to the Oakland convention center and is located near the city center. The room was great and the Marriott mattress provideds the best night sleep. I paid $219 a night, which was reasonable for the area. The restaurant and breakfast buffet are pricey at ~$20 for what you get. The parking was $24/nt.

I decided to eat outside the city at a much lower price for dinner and breakfast. I parked for free in the angled parking spaces around the corner on the left side of the hotel. Be careful about parking in the Park and Pay since it is free from 6pm to 9am. There are additional signs for street sweepting from 3am to 6am. You will get a ticket for that.
