“A good find on a fascinating waterfront”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2014

I like Joie de Vie hotels in general -- friendly vibe and good service. The Waterfront Hotel doesn't have the wonderful zen hoopla and room "stuff"such as robes of the Vitale, for example, but for price-performance ratio you can't beat it. Very nice staff; amazing location that is only going to get more interesting over the next few months and years.

When I stay at the Vitale, I walk or run the Embarcadero. At the Waterfront, you can walk the Oakland Waterfront (not as long but also picturesque and much less crowded in the early morning.

Good restaurants nearby and lots of ethnic restaurants within a 10 minute walk.

It's easy to get to San Francisco as the ferry is at the Waterfront's side door. Good corporate meeting place -- lots of meeting rooms and when the group breaks, attendees can take a leisurely stroll and not feel like you're in a crammed city. Daydreamers can watch the many sailboats head out to the Bay or return in the evening.

Room Tip: Go for a bay view.

It all began when we arrived at the AMTRAK train stsion in Jack London Square. We called to see if someone was available to pick us up, as it's not the greatest area at night. Their shuttle had stopped running, but they found someone from the staff and wre there in 5 minutes. At check-in, everyone greated us. Thje desk person checked us in and then told us she was upgrading us to a mini-suite. What a surprise and what a great room. All of the amenities and everything in the room was above standard. The sheets were like satin. The coffee maker was a Keurig and they had both premium coffee and tea for their guest. In the afternoon, the have complimentary wine and cheese. The y are located one block from the Oakland-San Francisco Ferry. It takes you to downtown SF and Fisherman's Wharf. We felt the key element in this hotel was the friendly and attentive staff. Only minor concern was the trains that run one block away and honking horns. But, when you fall asleep, trhe horn noise disappears. Would highly recommend this property to anyone traveling to Oakland.

Room Tip: Corner suites are large and sunny. Don't worry about city view vs waterfront view

This was a great place to stay. We actually stay there for Spring Break a few weeks ago--it rained the first 3 days we were there. It is a short walk to the Ferry(clipper Card can be used too!) that goes to the city early and last ferry back is about 8:15 pm.Time to eat dinner in the city and grab ferry back. Gotta go to the Delancy Street restaurant! Very reasonable and exquisitely decorated and very nice, helpful staff. $ block south of the Ferry Bldg.
We asked for a "waterview room". Gorgeous! Views of Oakland Bay! It was a nice sized room with 2 queen beds, including all the amenities. ONLY issue was noisy neighbors partying & this room had an adjoining door---which may have been where the majority of noise came through!? We call the front desk and the room quieted down--no problem. The front desk staff was excellent as was the valet/concierge(when they weren't retrieving a car). The location, in Jack London Square, is good, particularly if you don't want to drive much. We avoided renting a car by downloading the 511 App and purchased Clipper cards at the Walgreen's at 14th and City Center--refilled twice. We used these all over Oakland, Berkeley and San Francisco --best Idea ever! We took a bus from JLS, to City Center in Oakland and grabbed another to Berkeley and the Piedmont area - super easy!! and There are several fine restaurants within easy walking distance. We did the do the SavorOaklandFood tour and it was worth the Money! Carlo, our tour guide was the best! also. Places not to miss: The Authentic Bagel(on 2nd st?) , bakery next door to that, and the best FORGE --wood-fired Pizza. The had a great armer's market on Sunday till about 2pm---it was a really good one too! Lots of choices, fo fruit vegs and plants! They have a nice little area as you come in that offers coffee and teas and a cool fire place!

This was a great place to stay. The room we got had a nice view overlooking the bay. It was a large quiet room with all the amenities. The front desk staff was excellent. A great place to stay during Strictly Sail Pacific. Perfect location for the show, comfortable rooms, good continental breakfast, and wine and cheese in the lobby in the afternoons. A welcome gift when you join their Joi club, and excellent service.

This hotel and Jack London Square punctured the stereotypes I had of Oakland. From my beautifully appointed Bay View Suite, I could look down at the square, and see the statue of America's first millionaire author, Jack London, who spent much of his boyhood and later years on this very waterfront. The square has a charm all its own -- sedate, refined, Northern California cool -- different from raucous beach areas elsewhere. The hotel is next to several rows of interesting little shops and restaurants. The Bay View suite is so spacious and tastefully furnished in a gorgeous palette of blue tones, crisp white bedding, pale yellow walls, and dark woods.I enjoyed staying in this very comfortable unit, with all the necessary amenities a demanding traveler counts on. The staff, starting with Ricky Tu at the front desk to the wonderful bell staff, take hospitality and service to an art form. The restaurant adjoining the hotel, Lungomare, is excellent for lunch and dinner. I loved staying at this hotel and will be staying here again instead of downtown Berkeley or San Francisco.

Room Tip: Life is short, splurge for a room with a water view.

So Jack London Square is a polite name for Oakland waterfront area. If your not an urban dweller Oakland in general can feel sketchy the graffiti, traffic, train noise and general lack of parking doesn't help to change that image. We were attending Strictly Sail Pacific sailboat show and chose the Waterfront Hotel in Jack London Square and we're pleasantly surprised with the overall accommodations, valet parking, double pane windows to block out noise, extra large remodeled rooms and excellent on site restaurant/bar. We were there for three days and didn't leave the Jack London Square area for anything. We attended the show but also enjoyed the other restaurants along the water front and local farmers market set up outside our hotel.
There's also a great kayak and canoeing store within walking distance where you can rent paddle boards and kayaks for some fun on the South Bay. Last but certainly not least this hotel is dog friendly, we'll skip the train next time and bring the pups!

Room Tip: The water front rooms are said to be quieter because they're farther away from the train tracks...
