“Great balcony view and lovely hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2012

After driving down from the Redwoods back to the bay area, we were so pleasantly surprised by this lovely hotel. Do not be daunted by the looks of the area when driving in - the Jack London Square area is very nice. We had a room on the water side and the view was fantastic! We could watch the giant ships come in and the ferry landing is adjacent to the hotel. There is also a very nice pool. The room was fine and our guests were delighted to drink Anderson Valley wine on the balcony and watch the sun set on the working side of the bay. The old Alameda base is directly across the narrow bay and there is a parade of boats and paddle boarders passing by. The front desk people were helpful and friendly. The only minor glitch was that they promote a free vodka tasting in the restaurant which, when you get there, is an obvious annoyance to everyone working in the restaurant. The waitress' snarky comments were a reason to patronize other restaurants over the weekend, but this was a minor point. Shopping, music, and the USS Potomac in the immediate area. Definitely would stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a waterside room - the views are fantastic.

The rooms are spacious and the staff is friendly. One can tell they have tried to upgrade an older building, however, the age of the building does stand out (loud floors, older paint/elevators etc) and furniture in the suites is poorly arranged (ex: we had an L-shaped sofa, a chair, a dining table, a desk, a couple night stands and and a king bed in our room and it appeared to be shoved in corners). What's more, the extra furniture seems ill-suited to the room (ex: why a huge dining table for 6 and L-sofa in a room for 2?) We appreciated the 3 minute walking distance this hotel offers to those riding the train or ferry. We were facing the train station and did not hear the trains too much. They accommodated our late night check in well, and the bed was comfortable. We had room service breakfast in the morning and the sour dough bread was very good, however, the eggs were extremely runny, 1 was only given 1 slice of toast with my $12 two egg breakfast and there were not many other breakfast options with meat. Our biggest disappointment was the dial up speed internet. My mac never did connect and we gave up. My ipad did connect but they wanted an upgrade fee to get "faster" service. Very underhanded if you ask me.

Room Tip: If you like lots of room ask for a suite on the 5th floor. This hotel is a good option if you are e...

This hotel is very beautiful in appearances, has beautifully decorated comfortable rooms and is located on the waterfront and boardwalk of Jack London Square. The service is excellent and everyone from the valet to the waiters have above average training in customer service. But, that is where the positives end for me. The internet is at a dial-up speed and they charge you $10 per day to upgrade to an average speed. Even at this don't expect to stream videos or download files. I visited Oakland to take a 2 day class at Samuel Merritt University and had work to do on my computer. If I'd have only known... I have to give credit to the front desk manager who spent a couple of hours on my Mac trying to help me get a speedy running internet. He went above and beyond, but the next day it was back to a crawl pace. The hotel did not end up charging me for the upgraded internet because it basically didn't consistently work for 3 days. The 'business center' consists of 2 computers located in the lobby which you have to pay to use. Don't expect to be able to check your email real quick. Be ware you will have to pay $20/day in valet parking plus tips if you rent a car. There is no continental breakfast and no microwave or mini fridge in the rooms, and the surrounding restaurants are plentiful but, expensive. You won't eat for less than $25/meal if you can even do it for that. I did enjoy walking around on the waterfront. The atmosphere was pleasant and festive with live music and activities. However, I felt that I paid a lot for very few positives.

Room Tip: I got a city side 1 queen room because waterfront rooms were about $50 more per night. It was very...

A little treasure in Jack London Square in Oakland, CA...the Waterfront Hotel. 15 minutes by ferry boat to San Francisco (terminal right next door). BART is a few blocks away, Oakland Convention Center, Old Town Oakland, Chinatown and Lake Merritt. Part of Joie de Vivre Hotels.
Out of the horrendous crowds, tourist traps and conjestion but close enough to enjoy SF .
Oakland has gotten nicer and is a nice respite instead of the City. Hotel right on the Bay(Oakland Estuary)

Room Tip: Ask for water view rooms. Nice restaurant on property, called Miss Pearl's Jam House. Ferry boa...

We were in the Bay area from the 3rd through the 7th. We stayed at a Best Western Plus, a Courtyard Marriott, and the Waterfront Hotel. Our stay at the Waterfront Hotel was the best of the three. The beds were very comfortable, the room (2 queen) was larger than our other rooms, and the location was great. Many have complained about the trains. We were in the back of the hotel (city view, closest to the tracks) and were not bothered by the trains. If you are a light sleeper, however, I could see how they could keep you up all night. We enjoyed the fixed up "old town" feel of Jack London Square. I was surprised by the upscale dining options in the area. We were looking for something more casual and found the Buttercup Grill a few blocks up from the hotel. It has an old time diner feel to it. Good menu options without the price.

We picked this hotel after searching for a two queen room in San Francisco. We saw a discounted rate on Travelzoo for this hotel and decided we were better off saving $200 and staying here. We didn't regret our decision.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper, pay more for the waterfront view to avoid the sound of the trains.

We are loyalist to the Joie de Vivre chain so wanting a place on the water near Jack London Square on the 4th of July... Well, our stay came with a price! No, not the price of the hotel but their lack of security and the break in of our car and that of a number of other's!
The hotel itself was in a great location and came with all the charm of Joie de VIvre properties. Our check in was easy, especially since we were very early and our room was ready. We got an upgrade as a Joy of Luck member had had the suite overlooking the square and water.
The room itself was large, with lots of windows and great lighting. Comfy bed and good sized bathroom with nice tub and shower. The downfall of the room (455) is that it had an adjoining door and there was a VERY LOUD party going on next door. At one point someone opened the door in there room and I thought they were going to come right on in. At some point security did come and they quieted down somewhat. I know there were elephants above us; whoever was up in that room was very heavy footed and early rises. There is also a train that goes by and it is loud. Perhaps not the best hotel for a good night's sleep!

The following morning, we called for valet and were alerted that our car had been broken into. In actuality a number of cars had their windows smashed and items taken. In our case it was a lot. Work computer, small DVD player, and much more...Someone had used the loudness of the fireworks to hide the smashing of windows. Where was security?

The manager, Pitt had already called a window repair company and was very attentive to our needs. Hopefully their insurance company will be as compliant. Our room was comped as was breakfast. They were very good at trying to make things right.

The hotel is very clean, people are friendly. It's not outdated as one review states. Nice large flat screen and Krups coffee machine. It is in the perfect spot to catch BART with an easy walk, there is a shuttle but it only leaves twice. The ferry is right near by as well to catch into the city.

We only tried the restaurant for breakfast and were not impressed. Eggs were poorly cooked and toast very dry and we had to ask for butter. No one ever came around to refill our coffee.

Maybe we should give this hotel another chance on a non-holiday but we will wait to see how the insurance handles the break-in before we commit!

Room Tip: Join the Joy of Life Club on the Joie de Viere web site. It's free to join and you will benefit...

No one told us about the TRAINS that go by at night. The room looked fine, the hotel requires an overhaul as it is pretty outdated. The staff was also average, they had no advice or recommendations for visitors. This place is just too old and too noisy for me to stay there or even Oakland for that matter.
