“Worst museum experience”
Reviewed October 14, 2012

Staff rude. I am a customer to purses being inspected when I go to an exhibit, but this was beyond the beyond. I was told to keep my purse under my arm, and did, but I was then told by a different guard, rudely, that I had to hold it in my hands. This was a normal-sized purse, not a backpack or oversized. Guard on a power trip. Outrageous. Alienating. Never been approached like that, been to museums all over the world.

“World class museum in Oakland!”
Reviewed October 14, 2012

If you're into the art, history and natural science of California, this is the place to be. In 2010 the museum reopened its renovated Art and History galleries. They'll open the renovated Natural Science gallery partially in October 2012, and then fully in 2013. The galleries are large, with lots of artifacts, art works and interactive displays. It's hard to be a passive visitor here; the museum offers lots of ways to engage with the collections. Gallery Guides and docents eagerly answer questions and share background information. The building itself is an architectural landmark, with excellent views of Lake Merritt and the East Bay Hills from the terraces. The museum store has improved a lot in the last few years, with lots of specialty merchandise you can't find anywhere else. Wherever you are in the bay area, it's easy to get here, as it's only 1 block from BART. One visit will NOT do; you'll have to come back!

“A nice museum”
Reviewed October 12, 2012

I grew up in Oakland, and this museum used to be free, but it was nice to see it still in Oakland with some added attractions.

“First class museum. See the 1968 exhibit!”
Reviewed October 3, 2012

Loved the 1968 exhibit.
Took me back, wayyyy back. A first class museum. I shed a tear, (the war) laughed over the clothes, and had so many happy memories. Breezed through the california exhibit, but was kind of tired to enjoy it as much as i know i can next time.
I will be back
