“Legendary Palace for dim sum in Oakland”
Reviewed January 28, 2008

Legendary Palace, built 1917 serves fine Chinese cuisine and dim sum along with fusion blends of American, French and Japanese in air-conditioned comfort.

Discounts offered excluding holidays are: dim sum Monday-Friday 8am-2pm 20% discount, Saturday-Sunday 8am-2pm 10% discount, daily after 2pm 30%, dim sum to go 10% discount. Service for dim sum is quite good, with tablecloth service. But I noticed that our selected tablecloth was dirty, the manager quickly placed a large square white paper the size of the table surface instead of changing the tablecloth.

Charge for tea by head, choice of tea, service on rolling carts. There are two floors, try for a table near the elevator if you go to the second floor, as that's where the food carts first appear from the first floor or near the service door. The selection is large and varied.

Don't order too many items too quickly, as you won't be able to consume it all. The servers are instructed to sell as much and as quickly as time ticks by, past the point of being assertive and touching aggressive behavior. I was uncomfortable with this behavior, all smiles trying to generate more sales. They are nice people though. Just look, and politely say no if you’re not interested.

Dim sum pricing in order of increasing prices are: $2.69, $3.29, $5.49, $6.58, $8.00.

Chris Huie, 31, head of one of the Bay Area's largest Chinese gambling organizations, was shot to death while dining with friends sitting near the window on the first floor on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 around 11:50pm, a block from police headquarters--making him the 53rd homicide for the year.

Take your time, it's best to go with a party of three or four then you can try out more different food items to share. There's a covered rice dish made with rice wine that's very tasty with complex flavors. The mango pudding with milk at the end finishes the meal quite well.

Best to go early before 11:00am for dim sum before the large crowds appear and finished by 2:30pm if not earlier.

Ballroom dancing with a live band on Tuesday, Wednesday, Fridays 7pm-10pm, dinner & dance $13-16 per person, dance only $8 per person. Credit cards accepted.

Daily 8am-midnight, free parking after 5pm-11pm with Aki Parking.

BART Oakland City Center 12th Street station exit 11th St

There is always a long line in front of this joint, so I've been wanting to try it, only to be disappointed. This is a dim sum joint for those of you who don't know. The dim sum is so-so. Very limited selection. You can only find the usuals like ha gow, shu mai, etc. And tea is 50 cents per person. But for the dim sum that they actually serve, the taste is okay. Not bad.

“Good Dim Sum”
Reviewed December 4, 2007

We went there for dim sum on a week day at noon. Definitely better than average and very reasonable prices. Our party of 6 had all we could eat for less than $50.

Thank Jeff K
