The menu is limited to pizza and I understand they've added a chef downstairs Hopefully it will improve.

This is really two very different restaurants. The cafe is fantastic. Casual, clubby, sophisticated. Try the polenta. It's amazing. Great pizza too. Go for lunch. For dinner you go upstairs to the beautiful dining room. We've been a few times and there have been misses, but overall you can't beat the refined experience and delicious Italian inspired dishes. You'll love it.

Our friends who live in the East Bay selected this restaurant. They convinced us that there really is a good restaurant in Oakland. Our waiter Daniel, a former restaurateur, was extremely knowledgeable of the menu, and made excellent recommendations for wine pairings for our meal. Highlights of our dinner included the Rosemary pappardelle with rabbit as an appetizer. Our two favorite entrees were a grilled, bone-in pork porterhouse with apples and grilled cabbage, and a grilled ribeye with mushrooms and creamed nettles. (I learned that nettles, when they are cooked, lose their natural irritating prickles and are very tasty.) Our desserts included water buffalo milk ice cream with balsamic vinegar topping (unusual combination but very good) and a delicious toffee custard. Daniel went into great detail in describing the selection of liqueurs for which he is the lead apothecary. We had one that was infused with 17 different herbs; we were able to identify about five of them, but it was a wonderful finish to the evening. This is right at a BART stop, and the neighborhood -- contrary to my preconception -- was actually modern, clean, and safe.

For the second year in a row, we celebrated the new year at Oliveto with a prix fixe dinner that included lobster bisque (wonderful flavor), tajarin (thin pasta) with black truffle butter, perfectly seared scallops, sliced ribeye, and a chocolate dessert that was scrumptious. Last year there was a live band downstairs in the cafe which made for a perfect ending to the evening. The server was extremely friendly and helpful, making for a pleasant evening all around.

Nothing worth mentioning positive! We called shortly before arrival to check on availability and put our name down. We were never asked what sort of meal we prefer but upon arrival they sat us "downstairs" which is a more casual atmosphere. This part was ok, however after five minutes of looking through the short menu when our server finally arrived, told us that the menus we were looking at were for "upstairs" which should be a more "upscale".

I ordered a beer that came at room temperature... For the second I requested "a cold one", that arrived seven to ten minutes later, by then we were ready to leave!

Pizza: Who can mess up a pizza? Well mine came under-cooked, soggy in the middle and the little mozzarella (if that's what that was) was of poor quality.

The Fish: The cod was tasteless and smelled as if it was not fresh...

The polenta: As far as I know polenta is made of either white or yellow corn. well, theirs looks like oatmeal and has a somewhat sweet taste. We asked the server what kind it was and she was unable to explain... I wish there was a mention of what to expect.

The pork stew: the pork meat was only fat and heavy unpleasant fat.

When I am going to a restaurant anticipating a great experience and not even only one food on the short menu is worth mentioning positive, the service, the quality of ingredients and the overall experience is disappointing, it is sad to disagree with those that enjoyed a meal and highly recommended me this place.

Sorry, but NOT returning!
