“New Year's Eve Prix Fixe Dinner”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 7, 2014

For the second year in a row, we celebrated the new year at Oliveto with a prix fixe dinner that included lobster bisque (wonderful flavor), tajarin (thin pasta) with black truffle butter, perfectly seared scallops, sliced ribeye, and a chocolate dessert that was scrumptious. Last year there was a live band downstairs in the cafe which made for a perfect ending to the evening. The server was extremely friendly and helpful, making for a pleasant evening all around.

“I wish the chef (if any) would eat the food he serves”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 1, 2013

Nothing worth mentioning positive! We called shortly before arrival to check on availability and put our name down. We were never asked what sort of meal we prefer but upon arrival they sat us "downstairs" which is a more casual atmosphere. This part was ok, however after five minutes of looking through the short menu when our server finally arrived, told us that the menus we were looking at were for "upstairs" which should be a more "upscale".

I ordered a beer that came at room temperature... For the second I requested "a cold one", that arrived seven to ten minutes later, by then we were ready to leave!

Pizza: Who can mess up a pizza? Well mine came under-cooked, soggy in the middle and the little mozzarella (if that's what that was) was of poor quality.

The Fish: The cod was tasteless and smelled as if it was not fresh...

The polenta: As far as I know polenta is made of either white or yellow corn. well, theirs looks like oatmeal and has a somewhat sweet taste. We asked the server what kind it was and she was unable to explain... I wish there was a mention of what to expect.

The pork stew: the pork meat was only fat and heavy unpleasant fat.

When I am going to a restaurant anticipating a great experience and not even only one food on the short menu is worth mentioning positive, the service, the quality of ingredients and the overall experience is disappointing, it is sad to disagree with those that enjoyed a meal and highly recommended me this place.

Sorry, but NOT returning!

“Tasty and a little creative”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 9, 2013 via mobile

The menu includes pretty good food riffed on Italian classics, often in creative ways. Sometimes the menu descriptions are more creative than the dishes themselves: little gem lettuces were baugna cauda turned out to be a very close relative of Caesar salad.

“Orange marmalade is outstanding and a warm friendly space is a bonus on this College Ave.gourmet street.”

Outstanding small inviting cafe. The best simple toast with orange housemade marmalade! The mini cinammon rolls are ten star. Tea is served in lovely small ceramic pots..so English and delicious. All menu items are superior. Lunch green simple salades and daily soups are terrific.

“A piece of Italy in US”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 2, 2013

Located between Oakland and Berkeley, it's a must when I even spend only a day at Berkeley. Good price compared to the quality of food, you can chose the friendly and cheaper brasserie at the flat floor or a more formal restaurant at the first floor, but you will never be disappointed! Natural ingredients, most of them directly imported from Italy, fast service and very professional! GREAT!
