Hadn't been here in a while, and while it is less crazily packed (the trendies have moved on to the next new thing) the food and service were just fine on a recent visit. The outside areas are perfect for that warm evening (over 70 at night!) in Oakland, and few other restaurants offer this.
The food is not taco-stand simple, there are some interesting takes and ingredients from Central Mexico, so it's not cheap but not outrageous. Enjoyed the carne asada, enchiladas with red mole, and the chocolate and tres leches cakes for dessert were great. Booking was easy, and service quite warm, helpful and efficient, an improvement over past visits.

We loved this food and will be back to every one of her restaurants when we can. DH said the chili relleno he has ever eaten and I liked the tacos. It was very good.

Not your typical "Mexican" food - the best we've had since traveling in Mexico. These are wonderful slow food recipes. Delicious moist carnitas: the most amazing and creamy Corn and Zucchini Pudding - couldn't get enough of it (recipe is in their cookbook!). For dessert we shared the incerdibly light, moist and flavorful Pastel de Tres Leches cake with strawberries - not to be missed!!!
There are 2 dining rooms and a lovely patio.

What I love about Dona Tomas is that is not the typical Mexican restaurant. You know the ones....Canned sauces poured over enchiladas with bean and rice, and general lack of imagination or real vibrant flavors. Dona Tomas is none of these things. Instead you will get real beautiful dishes, with complex Oxacan styled sauces. I love the enchiladas because the mole sauce changes through out the seasons. I could go on and on about this place. Oh, and did I mention how amazing their Margaritas are? YUmmy Is all I have to say. They have a beautiful out door seating area, perfect on a summers evening.
They serve fun brunch fare on Sundays as well.

I really wanted this place to be good. It had sent out all the "right messages" about innovative Mexican food. Sadly it was simply a bust: indifferent quality, sloppy service, and frankly, inferior ingredients. I have had better fish tacos served from a truck. Quesadillas were tasteless. The mole sauce was decent, but served alongside were over cooked, nasty greens. Prices are high with cuisine not up to the price level. Our server was in attentive and essentially unskilled. The hostess was downright nasty. In short we will never return.
