“Fine Old Movie Palace with good politics”
Reviewed December 22, 2012

Four theaters, two small but not tiny, one large, and a big majestic main hall. On weekends they have the pipe organ music before the movie in the main theater. It is an enthusiastic knowledgeable movie going theater . . . as is typical of the inner bay area... people stay for the credits. Plus the owner has good politics. He blasts politicians and programs he feels are outrageous (i.e. war, GOP, etc.), and local issues, in his marquee so reading it is always a treat. He fought the big studios in a monopoly lawsuit because they wouldn't let him show first run movies and won a substantial settlement from them.

“A local gem”
Reviewed December 20, 2012

Love coming here as it feels like a truly old fashioned moviegoing experience. Just wish the ticket sellers could manage a smile and a thank you now and then.

“Needs a Refurbish”
Reviewed December 15, 2012

A grand old lady fallen into disrepair. It's musty, you sit on the floor of most of the theaters and look (way) up at the screens, though I believe the little balcony conversions are stadium style. Sounds bleeds through from the other divisions. And every time I go to the Men's Room I find a new horror; most recently the urinals were filled with unflushed ocre-colored brine, as if the owner had put the flushing cycle on a stingy timer.

“I love the Grand Lake”
Reviewed October 20, 2012

Great movies, comfortable seats, incredible decor, reasonable prices. And the politics are wonderful. The Grand Lake is the anchor of the neighborhood.

“Fun old fashioned comfortable theatre!”
Reviewed September 18, 2012

Best place to go to really feel like you are at the movies. The theaters have amazing art deco decorations, like Egyptian themes, and every movie feels like an event.
