The views of the bay are excellent and the landmark statuary and mausoleums are jaw dropping. Look for famous family names on millionaires row like Kaiser, Bechtel, Ghirardelli, Crocker and Merrit. The Chapel of the Chimes columbarium just outside the gates is not to be missed. It is an unbelievable gem by Julia Morgan and inspires awe.

Hard to rate cemeteries, but this has a large number of famous family plots from the movers and shakers of old San francisco. It has great plantings and is laid on flat land, gently rolling hills, and a few steep hills. In the spring their bulb collections sprout forth thousands of blooms. It is well groomed. Lots of people go there to relax, to walk, and some to bike ride. Nice place.

How many people know their history of the Bay Area? Probably not too many. Take a tour given on a Saturday, free of charge through Mt. View Cemetery in Oakland. Or, if you do not have the time, simply saunter around and notice the names on the tombs....Meritt, Crocker, etc.
There are very many prominent artists, architects (Julia Morgan), business magnets (Henry Kaiser) buried and interred here, which you might not know. Stop in at the Office to get a brochure and map. That will help you on your walk. Take a good hour and just a section of this
lovely cemetery designed by Olmsted, who also designed Central Park in New York City.
It is by no means a dreadful place, it has about the most stunning view of the Bay and the new Bay Bridge, its grounds are well kept, and the statuaries of angels are to die for.
Many joggers and Moms or nannies use Mt. View as their morning walk. You need not be
scared and you can enjoy the tulip display in the Springtime or partake in a Memorial Day
celebration. This is a place to enjoy right in the heart of the Oakland. Also get an ice
cream at Fenton's after your walk. That creamery is on Piedmont, just down the street!

I am not a regular at cemeteries, but Mountain View Cemetery is so inviting and interesting that I walk there ... and have even taken young creative writing students there for a field trip! It is the las home to many of the biggest family names in California history, but it is also personal. There is a section for babies that will break your heart. The tombstones of in the Jewish section and the many Asian inscriptions are striking. As one walks through, one is aware of Oakland's long history as a city where peoples from all over the world are neighbors. Just outside the wrought-iron gates is a Columbarium designed by the famed Bay Area architect, Julia Morgan. Drop in there for still more quiet time in a beautiful setting. Then, leave, walk down Piedmont Avenue and enjoy one of the fine restaurants you'll find. It's good to be alive!
