The stories of the cemetery and the folks buried there are quite interesting, and with a guided tour you learn about things you would otherwise perhaps walk by and miss. Like the Civil War burial area, ringed by Civil War-era cannonballs, or the grave markers shaped like logs that indicate a Forester (not the car) is buried there.

And on a nice day it is a peaceful and beautiful place to walk.

Surprising to say, but one of the best places in Oakland is filled with dead people. Not many people think of cemeteries in terms of recreation, but a walk in the Mountain View Cemetery is always a delight. This is a large, historic cemetery (established in 1863) covering an immense amount of ground from the Oakland flatlands off Piedmont Avenue up into the hills. It was originally designed by the prominent 19th century architect, Frederick Law Olmsted and has walking paths that will take you past many historic grave sites and into places with marvelous views of San Francisco Bay. The older sections of the cemetery are filled with the burial sites of famous 19th and 20th century Californians, some of whom are memorialized with large mausoleums and other types of impressive monuments. Also of interest is special section holding the remains of Civil War veterans who later migrated to the Bay Area and eventually died here. To walk through this cemetery is to take a stroll through history, something I do at least a couple times a month. And if you really want the deep background about the place, you can take guided walks with volunteer docents.

This is a well maintained cemetery. Its an old cemetery but they keep the grounds pretty nice. Its simply a pleasant visit with departed loved ones. The staff have always been helpful.

This is more than a cemetery. It's a park for public use. The park a breathtaking site that's perfect for a long walk or a drive. When you first enter, you can stop and pick up a map of the site and literature about the architecture and some of the more famous "residents." If you have time during the weekend, there are three-hour tours led by a docent on specific Saturdays and shorter overview tours on others. Their website -- www.mountainviewcemetery.org -- has more information on tours and events.
