Otherwise, I'd say it was pretty overrated. The ceilings are really high which gives it a sense of greatness, but ultimately, walking around made me feel really small and lonely. It has a huge tub of holy water in the back which stood out and a downstairs which was HUMONGOUS. I found it a bit odd that it was so close in proximity to work buildings, but it has a fine view of Fairyland and Lake Merritt.

if there are not a lot of worshippers present for a service, one tends to feel lost and looks up to the glass ceiling instead that gives off a different light depending of the time of day and the position of the sun rays.

Take a tour of this architectual marvel. Everythings included.

Located across from lake Merritt, the city's large manmade lake.

The restaurant on the lake is a few blocks up. Services are open

to all even though it's a Catholic Church. The interior is amazing.

Went here to hear The Chanticleers at Christmas. Sound was just amazing.
An extremely interesting church for all denominations to visit.

Even before we got inside, my husband and I knew this was a special building. He is an architect and together we have seen dozens of cathedrals around the world. We are so glad our aunt and uncle took us inside this stunning church recently, while we were on a daylong walking tour of the city of Oakland.

The main nave is fabulous, with light suffusing everything. I was particularly stunned by the wall directly behind the altar, onto which it seemed to me there was projected an ancient icon of Christ. But then I read that it is actually a window and the image of Christ is created by natural light passing through aluminum panels that are pierced by nearly 100,000 holes.

Be sure you go into the crypt below the main church, it is also a beautifully designed place. It serves as a crypt and is perfectly suited for meditation and contemplation. Its design reminded me a little of the simplicity of the Deportation Memorial (Holocaust memorial) that is behind Notre Dame in Paris.

This cathedral is well worth a visit if you are taking a walk around Merritt Lake.
