The Clarion is in the very center of downtoepwn, a block from the 12th St BART station and Civic Center, two blocks from the convention center, near tons of reastaurants and bars and on the edge of Chinatown. Less than a block from the historic Tribune, walking distance to Oakland Musuem, Lake Merritt, Jack London Sauare, Cathedral of Christ the Light.

The prices are great, the front desk friendly and efficient, the breakfast surprisingly ample—hot scrambled eggs, hash brown potatoes and a breakfast meat, plus bread, muffins, bagels, yogurt, oranges and bananas, juice, good coffee and tea. The breakfast room was never crowded and I was there Monday-Saturday at different times from 6:30-9 (it’s only open 6:30-9:30).

It’s well maintained and pretty clean overall, but thus is an old shabby building that has seen better days.

The rooms are small and cramped. Bathroom doors are bizarrely heavy and stay shut unless you prop them open with something heavy. Many rooms have no exterior windows and are like caves. Unfortunately due to a massive construction probe t directly across the street virtually all rooms with exterior windows are unbearably noisy from 6am through afternoon and sometimes beyond. The cave rooms are very quiet though. I guess one benefit of the old building is thick walls.

No room service. There are elevators but lots of little steps and rather narrow halls.

Room tip: Until the construction is finished, ask for an interior room. It will be dark and windowless. However, blissfully quiet.

IN downtown Oakland, the clarion is tucked away on 13th Street in the midst of two construction sites. There is no parking attached to the hotel which means you have to find something yourself which will add 45 to 60 dollars to the cost of your stay. The room was so small that the desk was no useable because that is where the TV sat - it was not working either. Although there was a double bed in the room you could not used the suitcase stand without blocking the door to the hall way or access to the bathroom. I have not seen a room this small since I stayed in a hotel built during the California Gold Rush. The best I could say is it was clean.

This hotel came at half the cost of the Marriot directly connected to the Oakland Convention Center, while being a 5 minute walking distance from it. The Clarion was clean, simple, quiet, and comfortable for my two night stay for the Bar Exam. Highly recommend, and it is nice to get away from the rest of the bar takers staying at the convention center.

Can't beat the value.

Close to restaurants and Bart station, easy walk to Oakland Museum of California and other sites. Beds was firm but comfortable and the breakfast was great. Real eggs, bacon and sausage, real potatoes, greek yogurt, cereals and more. Staff was nice. Located in Chinatown neighborhood and right next to Tribune building. Lots of construction going in the area including right across the street so it was a bit noisy at times. Some of the streets in the ,broader area were ok during the day but may be questionable at night however there are good restaurants in safe walking distance for dinner.

Great location, new, comfortable bed and linens. Nice, helpful people working the front desk. However, the room and hotel as a whole needs to be gutted and renovated, it's a dump, old, poorly remodeled at point
