I'm sure the beer and food at this fairly popular place is wonderful. However, my friends and i from all over the Bay Area in Northern California, decided to go there after reading about their highly publicized Japan Beer Fest event.

We got there at least 30 mins before the start of the event and it took us at least 2 hours before we were able to sit down and enjoy the beer and pastramen.

The event was well attended, however, the staff was not prepared nor did they plan well for the event.

There was a line to pay for the event (about 30 min wait), a line to get your beer (only 1 beer at a time if you picked the flight of four, and the line was another 30 min), and a shorter line for the ramen (line was about 10-15 mins, but another 20 mins before your ramen is ready).

If you are going to visit this popular place, do so when there is no event. Otherwise, be prepared for a long day of standing in line and staff not caring that there is a line.

The Trappist is a great place to enjoy a good drink in a classy atmosphere. It boasts a great selection of beer, which means you have more than enough choices. But if you still don't know what to go for, the staff can provide you with some recommendations. The place is not only about beer, food is also available. The food eaten at the place was better than you will get in some other pubs around. It is a nice place to go with friends for responsible beer drinking.

I walked by it on my way from Jack London Square - trouble was I was looking for it. Make sure you find this funky little slice of coolness. Friendly staff, comfy vibe and good eats. The drinks are good if you like Belgian styles. If not they have plenty of other handles. The grilled cheese was everything it is cracked up to be. Cheesy heaven with shrooms. Nice

For the past 5 years, I have been indulging my passion in consuming delicious craft beer. If there are tasty snacks to boot, well then that it just a little slice of heaven isn't it. The Trappist has both of these things contained in the perfect environment to kick back and enjoy some Belgian brew on a cold East Bay night. Watch your budget though things are a bit pricey. Not too bad, but not the cheapest either.

You may choose either of two doors to enter Trappist, one to the front bar, the other to the back bar - one hopping and loud, the other cozy and conversational. We opted for the latter, but after a few beers, I can't remember which it was. No matter, it will be readily apparent. We entered an old world space of brick and wood, low lit. An excellent selection of beers here, carefully tapped into a baffling assortment of pint and stemmed glasses that inspires me to further investigation. The menu offers almonds, olives, cheeses and chocuterie, salads and sandwiches. We chose four cheeses with prosciutto and salami, which were accompanied by baguettes, almonds, and apple slices. It was easy to imagine being in Brussels or Bruges - a convivial background for a good long talk.
