The Lake Chalet Seafood Bar and Grill sits on the shores of Oakland's Lake Merritt. The restaurant is newly remodeled and has a great dock that extends out onto the lake. On sunny days there is no better place to be. The happy hour menu is not only tasty, but inexpensive. Usually there is music playing (live on weekends) and the place jumps. They have craft beers on tap as well.

If you're of the mind you can walk over to the adjoining dock and take a ride on an authentic Italian gondola brought over from Venice and operated by a young family . . . you'll think you're in Venice.

A great escape from the city (without leaving).

Downtown Oakland used to be a place to avoid, but no longer. This property is a bright spot, within walking distance of much of downtown, easy to reach by car or public transportation. This is a seafood-based restaurant with fresh ingredients and sparkling service. It has eclipsed some of the better known seafood places in Oakland. On a pleasant day, stroll in and enjoy. Only reason to withhold that fifth "star" is that the menu is fairly standard.

Too bad my food was cold- the salmon I'd asked for "on the rare side" so could understand it not being super hot, but the grilled romaine and the mashed potatoes? Not good. The salt less bread wasn't as tasty as it could've been and the molten chocolate cake wasn't molten at all. Where was the hot hot fudge or chocolate sauce? The inside of the cake-let was thoroughly cooked through, barely warm even. Service was great and food was tasty (except the desert was just so-do), but not up to the hype as far as I'm concerned. Too bad. Great view though.

My daughter and I were seated at a window table with a great view of Lake Merritt just as we requested on Open Table. Service was marvelous. Brooke, our very efficient and cordial server, was extremely knowledgeable about the food and drink and was right on with her recommendations. The food was excellent. For starters we had seafood deviled eggs with crab and shrimp, a thick version (excellent) of New England Clam Chowder with bacon, and sautéed laughing bird shrimp. We both opted for the roasted sea bass entrée with Braised Baby Artichokes, Wild Mushrooms, and Pee Wee Potatoes and Olive Vinaigrette. From the drink menu we chose a very smooth Boulevardier (Bulleit Rye Bourbon, Campari, Sweet Vermouth, Lemon Zest) and a sidecar (Cardenal Mendoza Brandy, Combier, Lemon Juice, Sugar Rim). There is also an extensive wine list. This restaurant has a bar, several dining rooms, and outdoor seating on the dock, weather permitting. We'll be back here soon.

This place has good food and fairly fast service. It is also BIG with a good number of tables and great views of the lake. I would recommend making a reservation to ensure prompt seating. It's a bit pricey though.
