This is one of the most romantic restaurants in the East Bay. It is an absolutely beautiful room in an old art deco hotel (now a senior residence) with excellent views of Lake Merritt to watch the gondolas, dragonboats, and rowing shells go by. It is elegant but not snobby. The menu is more casual than one would expect in this setting, but that is fine as the food is very good and the prices are extremely reasonable for the Bay Area (Coq au Vin $16, Pork Loin $15, Wow!). Our very friendly server, Maggie, was very well informed and her recommendations were right on. She, and Heidi, the GM, kept checking on us to see everything was fine – and it was. The atmosphere is quiet and relaxed. There is a full bar and an interesting wine list. We will return soon.
