Lake Merritt is fast becoming an "in" spot among the dot.com professionals and with good reason. The walk around Lake Merritt always has joggers, new parents strolling their infants, families on a picnic and tourists checking out the area.

This tidal lake, 3.4 mile around, is a delightful gem near downtown Oakland. I have run around this lake at least once a week for more than 20 years, and I never get tired of the spaciousness, views, sea breeze, birds, buildings, and people - all creating a magical vortex of positive energy. Whether watching at the birds on the island that was the first bird sanctuary in the U.S., taking in the elegant residences and high rises across the lake, enjoying the ducks and geese dabbling or diving in the water or leading their little goslings around on the grass, observing the diverse group of people walking around the lake or boating on it, listening to the noon bells of the church, or gazing across the lake at the sky, I have always felt refreshed and uplifted here. And this last year, they re-landscaped one whole side of the lake with a wide variety of gorgeous drought-resistant and hardy plants and graceful walkways that thrill me even more. As an Oakland resident, I'm proud of us for paying for this enhancement of this gem of a park, which included repainting and repairing the pergola as an elegant entrance for pedestrians into the lake, and cutting down on traffic lanes and adding space for pedestrians. I bring all my out of town visitors here and they are always wowed.

Food available is in the restaurants across the street on Grand, or at the Lake Chalet on the lake. Or, on Saturdays, go to the Grand Lake farmer's market, at the pergola end of the lake, and have a picnic!

Lake Merritt is a visual delight. Roughly shaped like a letter Y, it's about 5K around the path, and fairly flat. Restaurants and other establishments abound, but what make LM special is some of the pre-war apartment buildings with their deco-style trimmings. Think Central Park West in NYC. Not as numerous but extremely elegant in their own way. Easy to get to via BART.

Though we are locals, we had never taken or even heard of the gondola rides at Lake Merritt before. We took advantage of a travel site promo and booked a pre-dinner 50 minute ride, paying a little extra to bring another two couples as the boat can seat up to six passengers.

We all had a blast. Got there early and sat on their deck overlooking the lake and sipped some Sangiovese we had brought along. They provided us with wine glasses. The boats are the real deal, imported from Venice. Angelino, our gondolier, was great. He was able to answer our questions about pretty much everything around the lake, told us a lot about being a gondolier in Venice (where he was the back-up gondolier for two gondolas), and we had a very informative conversation about local Italian restaurants and imported wines (as he also works for an Italian wine distributor). He's got a nice voice and sang several songs as we went around the lake.

I'm not sure why we had never heard of these rides before (which apparently have been there since 1999), but we're glad we tried it. A taste of Venice in Oakland!
