La Calaca is not going to serve you massive portions of cheap food. What they do serve is great, honest-to-goodness LARD-based flour tortillas. If you have only experienced the rubbery, elasticized oil-based tortilla used everywhere in CA, you might have a healthy heart but your tastebuds have never had the wonderful, buttery-tasting, flaky goodness of a true old-fashioned tortilla.
Best are the carnitas and carne asada quesadillas. The fried fish is better eaten in the Baja taco. The server will bring you three salsas in big squeeze bottles: mild, hot, and super-flaming! The hidden gem here is the Mexican burger: a delicious good-sized patty (get the dry Jack melted on it) with pickled jalapenos on a magnificent "telera" roll. The roll is what French bread USED to taste like (the French taught the Mexicans how to make great bread in the 1800's). How good is it?--my DH doesn't like burgers....but he loves this one! Great, funky decor and a tiny parking lot, but street parking is fairly easy. It's hidden inside the "Check Cashing" mini-mall, opposite Walgreen's/Genova Deli.
