“Loved the STAFF”
Reviewed August 4, 2007

Due to Airline delays, we were unable to arrive at the Chateau du Sureau until nearly midnight. Tired and hungry, the staff greeted us as if it was midday. They took care of our luggage, parked the car, offered food and welcomed us HOME!. What a delight. Each day, the entire staff were exceptional, helpful and pleasant. And did this with such charm, making us truly feel "Special".

Our entire stay was one incredible day after the other including the food which was superb.

Sincerely,

Loretta Lizotte

My husband and I are regular visitors to the Chateau and can't imagine staying anywhere else . The staff are delightful - very personable- and make every effort to accommodate our requests. The meals, both at breakfast ( which is included in the room rate) and at the Elderberry House dining room are spectular. There has never been a problem modifying an item to indulge my food preferences. The rooms and the grounds are beautiful and the spa receives rave reviews. We have never found the staff to be intrusive . We welcome all the little touches and find that when the staff inquire about plans etc. it is with the intent of offering suggestions, directions to the destination, insight into local traffic and the like. If something is not to our liking( I too have things I don't like touched) a simply comment resolves the problem. Like the previous writer I would be disappointed had I experienced the " wedding situation" he described , as the dining room experience is simply not to be missed. But of course no place is perfect, nor right for everyone. I can only say that we find the Chateau to be an intimate unique destination where we feel more like treasured friends in a private home than paying guests. We have already booked our return and highly recommend this wonderful place.

We have stayed at the beautiful Chateau du Sureau several times and have always had a very relaxing vacation. Guests are made to feel very special, like a member of the family. We did not find the "extra" attention intrusive at all. We enjoyed the sweet treats left by their little elves. There are no t.v.s in the rooms, but there is one in the Grand Salon. There are plenty of books to read in the library and games to play inside as well as outside. The pool area is nice but small, with only a few chairs. As others have mentioned, the rooms are lovely with very comfy beds, but are rather small and filled with not very useful furniture for storing your belongings. The Rosemary room has a large bath with separate shower and tub. It's bath has plenty of drawer space. It is directly over the Chateaux kitchen, so if you want to sleep late in the morning, pick another room. The noise will wake you up, even if you wear earplugs. The Chamomille room next door feels a little more roomy. It has no storage in the bath at all, with the exception of room under the sink where they have stored extra t.p., hairdryer, tissue, etc. (the only drawer in the bath was too shallow to accomodate a hairbrush). The Chamomille bath has a combo shower/bath which was very deep and extremely difficult to get in and out. The large tub has slanted sides making it even more dangerous to negotiate - scary! The Rosehip room is large and comfortable with the exception of being on the first floor, tucked under the stone staircase. If you aren't up early, it's noisy listening to folks coming up and down the stairs. We wish they would start cleaning the rooms a little later in the morning, giving those who wish to sleep past 8:00AM on vacation the opportunity to do so. There is a lot of "cupboard door" noise in the halls.

We would give the Chateau a higher rating were it not for a problem during our last visit which requires attention from the management. We were not told there would be a wedding at the Chateaux on the Saturday of our four day weekend stay. Their world class restaurant was "closed" for the wedding, which meant other guests could not avail themselves of it's special ambiance for THEIR special occasions. Rather, the other guests were relegated from the restaurant (in a separate bldg) to the Chateaux breakfast room and "patio" for dinner, an atmosphere in no way comparable. To add insult to injury, VERY LOUD POUNDING music went on late into the evening (11:00 PM) It was horrible, and ruined our romantic evening. Because the "dinner service" was moved from the restaurant to the Chateaux breakfast kitchen, the "cleanup" noise could be heard until midnight. Banging pots and pans, laughing, doors opening/shutting etc. We understand the management has the right to host weddings on their property, however, it should be a MANDATORY requirement for their reservations personnel to notify any "non-wedding" guests booking a stay during that time. It should be the guests right to decide whether they want to listen to this noise during THEIR romantic vacation. One couples' "special day" should not ruin that of another. Better yet, wouldn't it be considerate of management to require the wedding party to book all 10 rooms for their party, thereby insuring no inconvenience to others? Be sure to inquire if there will be a wedding when you make your reservations. If not, enjoy!

After reading this message I was deeply saddened, especially as this was written by someone who had visited us before. Guests usually leave the Chateau with the feeling of warm friendship. How very grateful I would have been for a personal contact. I believe our guest rooms are very cozy with lovely bathrooms. They offer everything needed for a comfortable stay. I have built the Chateau in 1990 in the style of the Provence and authentic architecture was important to me. Before the turn of the century construction for royal palaces was done always very grand for the common areas while bedrooms were made small so to "wrap" and envelope and feel personal. It was my aim to recreate this time of long ago - and quite often someone will believe I have merely refurbished a very old Chateau. Hearing this makes me very happy! I have rectified the need for drawer space and made the step in the bath tub safe. We do understand that loud noises and a negative experience because of a wedding is wrong and so regret that this happened and with new regulations will make certain that such a situation won't occur again.

What a great experience! We looked for a quiet cocoon of a hotel for our wedding, and it was the perfect choice. the property is elegantly furnished, the service is so lovely without being stuffy or overbearing as some other reviewers mentioned. We are on the young side, and very casual (though we do love great hotels!) and didn't feel that at all. They were just very thoughtful and accommodating. Also, best iced tea ever, and a terrific massage. Will definitely go back...

My wife and I have just returned from our second stay at The Chateau du Sureau in Oakhurst. One is always apprehensive about returning to a hotel as things can change in two years. However, we had the most wonderful time. We were treated as old friends by the staff who sorted out all of needs in no time at all. They were discrete but always available.
On arrival staff are waiting to greet you at the bottom of the Chateau steps. They sort out your luggage and park your car whilst you enter the hotel. On arrival there's a glass of wine and tasty nibbles to help you unwind from your journey. The rooms at the hotel are based on those you would find in a high class traditional European hotel and so might not suit everyone, but for a special occasion a four-poster bed is a must.
Breakfasts are usually taken on the terrace but there's a inside breakfast room if you prefer.
The grounds are wonderfully tended and you can relax by the fishpond in a shaded gazebo. There's also a small quiet pool for those who want it.
Lucy Royse and her staff go out of their way to assist and advise you on your trips around the area and provide marvelous picnics. The staff have been at this hotel for years and remain happy to be there.I think that this says a lot for the quality of the management and the establishment.
Dinner at Erna's Elderberry House restaurant is a sensation! The meal can include a variety of fine wines from the region if you wish. It gives you a chance to sample wines that would be unavailable elsewhere and rest assured that the sommelier will have gone to greats lengths to match the wines to the dishes.
Since our last visit there has been the addition of an excellent Spa.
Wholeheartedly, recommended for a superb place to stay in the USA! There are few hotels in the US that offer such quality service, hospitality, and that personal touch.

We stayed at the chateau last week. My wife says it is the first time she has ever been sorry to leave a hotel. Without a doubt the finest service my wife & I have experienced. The price, though seemingly high, is reasonable for their type of excellence, Lovely setting, extremely romantic room, (including the best hotel bed I've ever slept on), and a warm, friendly staff that seems happy and anxious to please. The hotel manager, Lucy, was warm and friendly. She sat with us the first morning at breakfast, found our likes and interests, and proceeded to schedule trail riding, guided hiking, golf and rafting for us. Even the owner herself, Erna, was helpful and warm, going so far as to arrange a special dish for me one day, calling the chef at the 5 star restaurant next door and having the food brought back to the Chateau for me. Our last day, I asked the kitchen people to see if I could substitute something special for one of the courses at the restaurant that evening and it was done - that simple. Our recent stays include The Millenium in NY, The Renaissance in Chicago and The Gran Villa Cora in Florence - none of them, although all wonderful, compare to this experience. The big difference here is the staff - from the owner on down. True, they are very quick to get the room cleaned and straightened as soon as you leave the hotel, we liked it. I read the couple of negative reviews here and it is obvious those folks simply did not ask for the staff to do it differently. It is the only truly European type hotel we have stayed in here, and they do it all well. My wife is already trying to plan our next stay in the area, and I assure you The Chateau will be part of it!! We heartily recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a truly unique, romantic getaway. Yosemite and the Sierras are merely a bonus. What a Great Place!

To say we enjoyed our stay would be an understatement. The moment we arrived, we were relaxed and stayed that way during our entire trip. As a frequent business traveler, this was such a pleasant experience, I can't wait to find the time to go again. The staff is so polite and accomodating they seem to really enjoy their work. The rooms are cozy, elegant and comfortable. The food is exceptional and the grounds are reminiscent of a fairy tale come true. We would have stayed longer if there were rooms available, so book early!
