My wife and I spent 6 nights/5 days at this wonderful place.
While the inn itself was spectacular both inside and out (French decor throughout the inside and lovely gardens and a fountain outside), the most incredible aspect was the service....far and away the best service we have ever received, anywhere! The staff truly catered to our every need and desire, greeting us upon each new arrival and asking what they could do for us (or bring to us in our room).
The restaurant staff at the adjoining Erna's Elderberry House was equally as accomodating (and the food was delicious).
The Chateau overlooks Oakhurst, CA (a town of approximately 13,000) and is 16 miles south of the southern entrance to Yosemite National Park (and 45 miles north of Fresno).
We hope we have an opportunity to return to Chateau du Sureau some day and we highly recommend it!

Yosemite National Park is an amazing place but what really made our stay there memorable was the hospitality we received at Chateau du Sureau. The hostess was Lucy and she was helpful above the normal call of duty. We hope that we are lucky enough to get back there again as there is so much to see and do in the area. We felt like we were treated like royalty by all the staff. Every small detail was taken care of for us.

When a piece in the Los Angeles Times Magazine about Chateau-like California getaways featured a picture of the Chateau Sureau, it intrigued us. We had just stayed at a Relais et Chateaux hotel in Provence, France over the summer, and were wowed by the food, the tranquility, the service, and the finest in amenities there. The rest of the newspaper article convinced us to check out Chateau du Sureau -- and we were not disappointed. True to the Relais and Chateaux name, this was a magical place and a magical experience. And that does not include Erna's where the food was so spectacular that we asked to meet the chef and have him sign our menu. (And we're not foodies or gourmands, either. The menu is framed and in our kitchen as a memento of the trip.) In contrast, to think that the following day we were taking long, long hikes into Yosemite with energy bars and water in our packs makes us laugh. And those hikes were great recommendations from --- the wonderful concierge at the hotel. She was a delight. A truly special experience. Highly recommnend.

This is the most amazing place you will ever stay. You cannot miss out.

My Husband and I stayed in the Saffron room from 22nd - 25th March as part of our honeymoon. There is no other hotel like this one. From the moment we pulled up at the gated property we were made to feel so welcome. We were greeted by Stacy who told us to leave all our luggage in the car and someone would bring it up and park the car for us. She showed us around the Chateau, the gardens and up to our room. We were then offered a complementary glass of wine or champagne and a little snack, which was brought to our room as we relaxed in front of the fireplace.

That evening we had planned to go for a meal in Oakhurst but decided that we didn’t want to leave the comfort of the Chateau. We asked Rob if it would be possible for him to make us sandwich, which he was more than happy to do. He also offered us a cheese plate which was delicious.

The next morning we had a lovely two course breakfast with freshly baked croissants and brioche which set us up for a busy day at Yosemite. We also chatted to Rob about where to go in the park and he gave us a guide book of the area. We set off with fresh fruit and cookies to snack on.

That evening we arrived at the gates and were “welcomed home.” We just couldn’t wait to step foot back inside the chateau. We relaxed in the bath with a glass of champagne and again chatted to Rob about our day. He made us scrambled eggs on toast with smoked salmon, which Craig has not stopped talking about since.

The next morning we met the lovely Lucy, the manager of the hotel, who offered us advice about where to visit. She told us about this beautiful place where no one else goes. We walked there and sat by the Merced River with the picnic Rob had prepared for us.

That evening we were again “welcomed home” and relaxed in our room before going to dinner in the amazing Erna’s Elderberry House. We enjoyed a delicious eight course meal where the service was impeccable.

The day we left we chatted with Rob and Lucy and also had the pleasure of meeting Erna the owner. Rob loaded up our car with our luggage and again packed us some goodies for the road as we headed for Vegas. Our stay here was the highlight of our trip and we did not want to leave, in hindsight we would have stayed here for longer and given Vegas a miss because the service in the Wynn was nothing compared to the Chateau. It was the detail that amazed us – the turn down service which was different every night, the way all of our things were tidied neatly for us, decaffeinated tea before bed, to mention but a few.
Thanks to Lucy and all of her team especially Rob for making our trip so memorable and special, we will definitely be back. Helena & Craig, a.k.a Mr & Mrs O’Reilly.

After staying at the Awhannee Hotel in Yosemite, we came down to the little village of Oakhurst for a 3 day hotel and spa experience.
This small European-traditional style hotel is genuine luxury experience to find among all the Best-Westerns etc. that crowd the two roads.

It is a unique experience and the dinner at Erna's Elderberry Lodge is a wonderful dining experience for any occasion in your life.

The staff is attentive, non-intrusive yet I was amazed and delighted at the little touches. The bedding was divine and the spa experience I had with Marie left me feeling rejuvenated after the hiking and snowshoeing in the Yosemite's.
Lucy was in attendance and very helpful and kind.

Breakfast is an experience in itself and I could last until dinner. Simply elegant.

Quiet, out of the way , waiting to be discovered

We just returned from our Thanksgiving four night stay at the Chateau. To best illustrate what we thought, we have booked the same four nights for next year! We loved everything about our visit. In the Chateau, we adored the fine service from every staff member. The graciousness was unparalleled. I can't remember everyone's names, but I'll mention a few. Leslie greeted us after our long drive, with warmth, and a snack (cucumuber and turkey sandwiches and delicous house tea). Two wonderful men took our bags and placed them in the room without our even knowing it. One, Rob, was also wonderfully helpful with his local knowledge, as we are avid cyclists, and we never would have found our way across the dam of Bass Lake without his guidance (and his water bottles and cookies!). Lucy was a delight, and everyone else. Of course, it was a treat to see Erna in the restaurant, and in the Chateau. She loves what she has created. Including the wonderful Art Deco spa, which we visited three times! The massage therapists were terrific. We ate three nights in the restaurant. And a little tip. The full menu is great, but they will gladly reduce it if you don't want all courses. James, the chef who oversees the restaurant, was very kind to spend time chatting with us. And Matthew, new to the restaurant from New Orleans (it seems several of the people in the restauarant spent time at the Windsor Court) was wonderful.

Other hints about the chateau. The breakfasts are great, but again, they will happily make any adjustments you wish.

As for outstide the Chateau. We had a very fun dinner at El Cid, a very local Mexican restaurant that everyone at the hotel seems to favor. One note of caution. Portions are huge. Next time we'll share the main course. We also ate lunch at Pete's Place, a local diner that serves wonderful fresh food, the way a diner used to be, everything from BLT's to Falaffel. Try it.

Of course the Park is great, though crowded, so we particularly liked finding off the beaten roads were we could take our bikes.

And, what we really liked overall is that the Chateau is a gem of a place in a small town that is not precious. You can get things there that you need. It's a town serving the locals rather than tourists, so day to day necessities are easy to come by. And, a little hint, if you're dying for the New York Times, just head over to Starbucks.

Have a wonderful time. We did!!!

We got married at the Chateau on 7-7-07 and then dined at Ernas Elderberry House. It was perfect on every level. The staff made us feel right at home. Even our children felt pampered and spoiled with every desire fulfilled. As the bride, I was completely relaxed because every detail was taken care of for me. We will be back for our anniversary next year!!!!!
