As another visit mentionned, this is the last town of any size before hitting Yosemite along route 120. We stayed here for two nights before visiting the park and then after. It is about a 2 hour + drive into the park from the hotel though. The hotel is in the process of a remodel, but the room we had was very nicely done and on the first floor. Note, there is no working elevator yet at the hotel, so if its important to be on the first floor to avoid moving luggage upstairs note it. Didn't participate in the free breakfast and the fitness center is not quite up and running. The hotel is right along the main route 108/120 so there are several fast food options very close as well as a Starbucks. Overall nice place to stay when there are limited options in this area of California.

Oakdale is a small town along Route 120. I have been staying at this HI Express due to my business trips. In the past year I have spent about 40 nights here. The staff are very friendly, accommodating and pleasant. If I ever needed anything during my stay, each person on staff no matter what shift was glad to assist me. My rooms upon arrival are always clean and the location is just right. Beds and pillows are comfortable. I can walk to any number of restaurants or grocery store in the evenings. The establishment is undergoing some renovations at this time but as far as my needs it did not interfere with my stay. The breakfast is average but I'm not staying here because of the breakfast, I stay because of location to my business. I continue to return due to great hospitality and friendly service. I highly recommend this location if you are in the area.

We flew into Oakland and wanted to get partway to Yosemite that night. Oakdale is the last town of any size before you hit the mountain roads. This HI Express fit the bill nicely. The hotel is currently under renovation, but we got a "brand new" room with new carpet and clean new bathroom. It offers the same reliable, hot breakfast that all HI Expresses offer, complete with the decadent cinnamon rolls. This property is a little smaller and less opulent than some of the newly constructed HI Expresses around the country. However, the staff was very friendly, and it had everything we needed. There are also several grocery stores, drug stores, a sporting goods store, etc. in Oakdale if you need to make last-minute purchases.

Stayed the night in Oakdale so we could get an early start to Yosemite. Convenient location on Hwy 120, pool for a quick dip, typical breakfast or free, and close to shopping for those forgotten items needed for camping. Hotel is being renovated, but it did not interfere with a good nights sleep. Starbucks and gas are close as you head up the hill in the morning.

Oakdale is the last town of size along the Route 120 route to Yosemite . . . and the last town where you'll find full-sized contemporary grocery stores and familiar fast food and gas brands and other chain retail establishments. As such, Oakdale is a great place to spend the night prior to entering Yosemite. Obviously, most people from the Bay Area can easily drive the 3-4 hours to Yosemite in one day, but stopping overnight in Oakdale can give you a head start that could come in handy if you want to hit a trailhead reasonably early or want to beat the heaviest traffic times on the winding and congested (no thanks to rude RV drivers) portions of 120 nearer the park.

From Oakdale, the entrance to Yosemite is about 65 miles, and Yosemite Village is about 90 miles (budget about 2 hours).

With respect to this hotel, it is pleasant, clean, and comfortable. The bedding and sheets were quite comfortable and provided a good night's sleep. Wireless internet was free, easy, and sufficiently fast for my needs. The complimentary breakfast does not officially open until 6:30 AM, which might not work for those wanting an early start on heading into Yosemite, but in actuality, they started serving around 6:00 AM, including the famous HI Express hot cinnamon rolls. There was also an Rube Goldberg-ish automated pancake maker that was kind of neat.

My only complaints: (1) climate control was not the greatest . . . there was a thermostat on the wall, but it did not seem to work and instead the controls were directly on the window unit (one of those units with settings like "high cool, low cool, etc." and a 'thermostat' knob that ranged from red to blue). It was a rather noisy unit too. (2) there was some noisy construction and remodeling work in progress, but they wrapped it up by 7:00 PM or so.

One final note: cans of soda from the Coke vending machines are only 60 cents . . . that's refreshing to see in a world where cola vending machines in many hotels are ridiculously priced.

We stayed at this property August 2012. At this time (August) there is construction going on and there are only a few parking spots. Just want to make sure to read through this whole post. The building itself and its amenities (room, pool, breakfast) should really be rated VERY GOOD. However, I am rating it Poor because of this experience:

I sent my husband down to get Internet access code. 45 minutes later, he came back to the room after what he calls, "a lot of drama" going on at the Front Desk.

Apparently, because of the construction and the lack of parking spots, a guest parked at an illegal spot on the hotel's lot (illegal due to construction zone). This was, per the guest, upon staff's advice as well. however, when she returned to the property, her car was nowhere to be found --- apparently towed while she was away. This undoubtedly upset her and because she was inconsolable (and was hysterical), cops were called and she was handcuffed and brought to the police station.

Yes.

What a hell of a night for that guest. It also made us somewhat nervous as guests to have our kids run around during breakfast -- they usually don't but, you know, boys, they usually rough house.

I think this was poor judgement on the property's staff. They could have towed the car TO ANOTHER, more legal spot then charged the lady for the towing expense. OR, since according to her they suggested it, just left it where it needed to be. But....just wanted to share that we will not be back, regardless.

Booked here literally as a walk in at 8pm. The two girls of reception were fantastic they booked us into a great room on the first floor as we had lots of luggage and 3 small tired kids. The room was huge and they provided extra bedding for our 6 year old. Nothing was too much trouble even though it was late. They did me a great price and did not charge for the extra child which was so welcome after a week of everyone else trying to charge you for every little change, extra tax, cleaning fees etc. they even offered us use of their laundry !
Breakfast was great and included in the price and again the staff couldn't be more helpful and were great with the kids.
It has recently been refurbished and is of a really high standard, much better than all the other motels of the same genre. It is a really nice hotel.
Great stop for us on the way to Yosemite from San Francisco.

Room Tip: Ground floor was great for us with the kids.
