“a classic bistro from france, top notch ingredients”
Reviewed April 26, 2014

having lived most of my life in San Francisco and part of it in france, I was thrilled to discover Bistro Le Crillon. The cassoulet reminded me of Toulouse cassoulet, the bread was so good I wish she would open a bakery. The ambiance was charming. The price point excellent especially the excellent selection of French wines. I don't know of anywhere in orange county where you could get a starter as good as the morel dish. A refreshing change from the formula corporate atmosphere restaurants.

“Horrible”
Reviewed January 18, 2014 via mobile

Oh mon dieu! Quel désastre! It is a shame anyone would call this wannabe French mess of a cubbyhole restaurant inside a mall anything but a cheap joint with lousy food, uncooked and uneven portions as compared to other tables. Polite waiter, that was it. A frantic disrespectful maître d' and a lady who hid behind the bar checking people out rather than concentrating on the poor quality of her dishes (Chantal?). A Martini 14.50 in a strip mall? Even if she and the host were French (possibly via Québec) they would not be calling French Onion soup the liquidy diced almost raw onions with one slice of cold bread and unmelted cheese. The salmon was half the size of the people on the next table and it came with ice cold potatoes au gratin, one slice of tomato cut in half? The Sole Meunière, a staple of good French cuisine, was served as two uneven gross slabs of fish with chopped in quarters frozen haricot verts. Another staple: the profiteroles (soggy pastry) served with canned whipped cream? The nerve to pose as French cuisine. A shame compared to any of the restaurants in Newport Beach.... We have eaten at Les Ambassadeurs at Le Crillon in Paris as well as many other restaurants in France. This pseudo restaurant should be closed and the proceeds of the selling of the furniture donated to charity.

“Tucked away gem for foodies and wine lovers”
Reviewed November 11, 2013

When you are in Orange County and you want a tiny oasis with a vast and special wine selection, fabulous Provencal and northern Italian food, intimate seating, and fair pricing Bostro le Crillon is the place to go. Ignore the fact that it is tucked away in a small "neighborhood strip mall", next to the Newport Racquet Club, on Eastbluff ridge, with no view of the ocean or the back bay. As you enter therre is a covered terrace area for lingering over aperitif and starters or enjoying friends, and then you go in to the special, intimate restaurant space. Once in, just relish the intimacy, care, attention, quality, craft and service provided by chef/owner Chantal and her partner and wne director for 20 years, Diego, and their professional staff, no matter when you arrive. For a special romantic dinner or a family gathering, it is relaxed, professional, and meets all your needs. I was visiting my son and daughter-in-law for the weekend.. She was sick and after we were sure she was asleep my son and I went for late dinner. Even though it was close to closing, they welcomed us in (with no care or reference to the delay on their closing) and gave us an incredibly special supper starting with a warm goat cheese and walnut salad over mixed greens for my son and an arugula salad for me, we shared the wild boar over pappardelle, and ended up with both the profiteroles and the valrhona chocolate souffle. Pure ecstasy for the palate, we had a 92 point, well-aged St Emillion by the glass withndinner that went wonderfully with the tang of the salads and then incredible spice of the boar, all for the most reasonable price. I don't know any restaurant that pours St Emillion by the glass and doesn't empty your wallet in the process, except here. Behind us a family of three generations was wrapping up an enjoyable evening, and Diego shared conversations with us. While we didn't imbibe, were you to want to, they also have a unique collection of cognacs, including some from the Hotel Crillon from 1945... So special.
We left with freshly baked croissant (traditional and chocolat) to take home and have for breakfast the next morning. Nothing could have better! It is not to be missed! Thank you Chantal and Diego. We'll be back every time I return.

“A very special occasion”
Reviewed June 16, 2013

Once in a great while, you can find a first-class family-run restaurant in which it is possible to arrive early, before many other patrons, and chat with the owner. You order a good bottle of wine, and you let the owner create for you a meal that is better than anything you would have picked from the menu. Bistro Le Crillon is such a place. The owner sells wine, and the wine list is an inch thick with selections from small vineyards. We settled on a 2009 Bordeaux. The owner set us up with a plate of melon and prosciutto, a Caprese salad, and duck terrine with homemade mustard, all outstanding. After that, we split a rack of lamb, succulent but left in the oven perhaps a minute too long. Dessert was a Pavlova, which was a special: soft meringue cookie with berries and whipped cream. The French bread is made on the premises, and it comes to the table hot, crusty, and buttery. The flower arrangement on the table consisted of six yellow rose buds, really beautiful. This may be my favorite special-occasion restaurant, in large part because it makes me feel special.
