Came for a wedding at the Pelican Hill Resort but didn't feel like paying Pelican prices. This one was $253 with tax on a Sunday night. A "suite" is a tiny bedroom separated by French doors leading to a "living room" furnished with a sofa, arm chair, desk, bar (no alcohol in it, per Marriott's Mormon policy), and television. Stayed on the 2nd floor, with some view of the back bay - nothing spectacular, but definitely better than facing a wall.

Vanity area was small but serviceable. Good shower was walk-in (mercifully no tub), bed was actually good quality, just the right amount of firm, with good pillows. Used my own toiletries, as the ones available left a lot to be desired. No shower cap unless you ask. Towels are substandard. Definitely nothing 4-star about it, and everything is corporate boring, but near freeways and definitely safe. Would never, ever make a special trip, but would stay again for a conference or such.

John the bellman provided the best customer service I've ever seen. He knew everything to do around the area and was extremely helpful with everything else that we needed. The hotel was also beautiful and all employees were great, except for Pam. Johnny's the man.

We highly recommend this hotel. The room set up was perfect for our families and the hotel staff was extremely helpful. If you are looking for a nice hotel for a reasonable price and be close to the beach, then this hotel is a good choice. Our family was very happy with our stay. Thank you Marriott for making us feel at home.

It would probably be unfair, overall, to rate this hotel as poor (two stars) but it’s clearly too much of a stretch to rate it as very good (four stars). First, the good: its location is convenient to major highways (without the noise), UC Irvine, and a number of business centers. The staff are very friendly and responsive (one exception noted below), and the restaurant provides good food and service (again, one exception noted below). The room we had was large (a two-room suite) and served our purposes, but it was not particularly comfortable.

Here are our issues. They don’t offer valet parking, which is no big deal, but they charge $29/night for self parking, which is a big deal. They don’t have anyone at the entrance to help with bags, and when we arrived there weren’t even any bag carts available (when we left, there were two carts available). The bed in our room was located directly under the AC vent, which wasn’t pleasant. The bathroom was very large but poorly designed, leaving us with one of the smallest showers we’ve ever had. The somewhat adjustable shower head was very high pressure and all of its settings put out needle-like streams that, due to the pressure, were quite uncomfortable. The pressure was tied directly to the water temperature so the only way to lower the pressure to a comfortable stream required lowering the water temperature to lukewarm or lower. Again, odd design. The duvet on our bed was torn and stained in a couple of places, one of which appeared to be a blood stain. These were small, but noticeable. The phone in the outer room did not work. The mattress was somewhat less than high quality. So, a number of irritants that individually aren’t all that big, but cumulatively they became a problem.

On two of our three mornings we had breakfast in the restaurant and enjoyed our food and servers. The egg white omelette was quite good, as were the Huevos Rancheros! But, on the third morning, we had very poor service. First, we had to get another employee to get our waitress to come to our table, twice. She seemed aggravated that we wanted to order from the menu rather than choose the (very over-priced) buffet option. Then, instead of having my side order of extra-crispy bacon prepared in the kitchen, as it had been both prior mornings, she brought us a plate of TEN pieces of stuck-together, certainly less than crispy, bacon that had obviously been taken from the buffet line. What she brought us bore no resemblance whatsoever — either in quantity or quality — to the bacon sides we’d been served the prior two mornings. She was unpleasant from start to finish. As I write this, I’m fighting the urge to drop the hotel rating to poor.

We will be returning to Newport Beach/Irvine many times in the next four years, as our daughter attends UCI. But, we will not return to this hotel.
