“Good business hotel”
Reviewed September 5, 2012

It's not a "luxury" hotel (e.g. Ritz-Carlton or Four Seasons) but a solid business traveler's hotel (e.g. Hyatt or Hilton). The pool is tiny (smaller than my pool at home!) Location is pretty good although not as convenient as the other hotel groups near Fashion Island further south. The area around the hotel becomes a GHOST TOWN during the weekend. Even the Carl's Jr. up the road is closed for dinner! So are the Starbucks, Jamba Juice, La Salsa, etc. The good news is you can easily drive around because there is no traffic. The $28/night parking is steep (although they charged us 1/2 for the first night). Was able to get a great deal on Priceline for $93 for Labor Day weekend and that makes up for it.

I had Pricelined a hotel in Newport Beach and was excited to see it was a Fairmont however hopped on Tripadvisor and saw the bad reviews so was expecting to be disappointed. The location was perfect...a quick drive to the beach, Balboa Island, Fashion Island, Crystal Cove...all of what the area has to offer. The hotel staff was kind and helpful. The valet was an added expense but also a nice and prompt service. The room was nice. The only issue we had was that the cleaning service did not come until around 5:00pm - when we were getting ready for dinner, so they came back after we left which was fine. Another thing we noticed was a lack of trash/recycling containers. The only trash container we could find not in our room was at the elevator on the first floor and it was always spilling out onto the floor which was just gross and not necessary.

I had read to sign up for the President's club so I did and this allowed us to utilize the internet for free and valet was half price for 2 of the nights.

My sister had a wonderful wedding at the Fairmont San Jose, so I have a fairly good idea of what a Fairmont is supposed to be. This mediocre hotel is NOT IT.

They actually brag in the in-room hotel services guide about how they spent $32 million to renovate this aging dump and re-open it as a Fairmont in 2006. This place was originally built in 1984 and has operated under several luxury brands.

Fairmont should sue their idiot interior designer for a refund. Even after renovation, the place has ugly decor, fixtures and furniture and STILL looks like a relic of the early 80s. The most critical flaw is the low ceiling height, which makes it impossible to properly convey the majestic, glamorous image normally associated with the Fairmont brand. The only way to fix that is to tear the place down and start over.

The few upsides are as follows: four elevators that run smooth and fast; bed was large, comfortable, and clean; HVAC was easy to configure and was able to precisely maintain a desired temperature; clean bathroom; widescreen TV with relatively large number of channels, including HBO HD; no unusual tears, stains, or scratches noted; comfortable poolside reclining chairs; and a Jamba Juice smoothie shop and Staples office superstore conveniently located across the street (though I did not need to resort to either).

Downsides include: dated 80s style decor throughout hotel; musty room smell; noisy HVAC (fortunately I'm a deep sleeper); relatively small, rundown swimming pool for a hotel of this price and size; pool and entire western side of hotel faces takeoff path for planes departing John Wayne Airport; low ceiling heights; and mandatory valet parking.

As many people have noted, this hotel is located in the northern, less glamorous end of Newport Beach---the office park/light industrial zone next to John Wayne Airport. The only thing it is close to within walking distance are bland office parks. The airport, South Coast Plaza, and UC Irvine are within a 5 minute driving distance, while the actual "beach" part of Newport Beach and the Fashion Island mall are at least 15 minutes away by car.

I got a decent deal on Priceline (under $140/night) for my Labor Day "staycation" in the O.C. to get my fall shopping done. Also, they charged me only $14 per night for the valet parking rather than the $28 everyone's been complaining about. But I was shocked to see on TripAdvisor that some other people have paid over $240 a night for their rooms. If you pay more than $200, you got ripped off.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a high floor facing towards the east, away from the airport; those are the most qu...

We stayed here for a weekend in August 2012 since we were visiting the OC fair. The location is in a business area close to John Wayne airport and not near the beach (even though the address is Newport Beach).

The hotel itself has seen better days. We did not eat here but did use the pool area. The rooms were adequate but beds were sagging. Service in the pool area was poor with no towels available until multiple people had to ask. Additionally the "pool" girl (drink server) never once came by to ask if wanted to order something. She did however walk past us multiple times.

The valet parking was good and free as we owned a hybrid car.

No towels at "pool". 3 families with kids called front desk multiple times. "Pool" is just fiberglass shell like a big bath tub. Jacuzzi water was way below jets. Nasty putty exposed around water jets. Dirty unkept pool deck with trays and old cups scattered about cabanas and lounge chairs. Hallway carpets dirty dusty and ratted. Our room hd bright red stain by window. As for the view.. well it is Newport but that matters not! Open your window, hear and smell the soothing relaxing scent and sound of jumbo air planes every ten minutes. What a dump! Valet guys were great! Front desk was great! Beds were decent nothing to brag about. It's really the property and building that sucks. Not close to the beach. No atmosphere. No nightlife. No reason to ever stay again.

Pleasant hotel, the room was very quiet, very clean, and well equipped. The staff is friendly and helpful and the location is great. They have a great fitness facility with an exercise room. The pool is small, but I did enjoy the cabana’s they are very well maintained. I found the front desk staff to be friendly and helpful. My husband and I had massages at the spa. We enjoyed the experience very much. Mona did my massage and was the best massage I have ever had. Brandi did my husbands and it was great. The spa staff was kind and attentive. We ordered a small lunch in the spa and it was delicious. When my husband comes back for work, I’m going to travel with him just to get a massage and enjoy the pool again. Overall our stay was a perfect weekend getaway. Valet was the only issue for us. We decided to go to dinner after our spa experience and we had the spa call down for our car. When we came down to retrieve our car, the valet was rude to us. I overheard the valet say to another valet, “oh they were at the spa, they are useless”. But overall I would give this hotel 4 stars.

I have enjoyed several stays at this hotel. In fact, I will ONLY stay at this hotel when in Newport Beach. The rooms are immaculate and the beds are extremely comfortable. Staff has always been friendly and accommodating. The hotel's spa is TOP NOTCH! I have been to spas across the country and this hotel has one of the best. If you're lucky, you can book a massage treatment with Mona- she has perfected the craft of massage and you will leave feeling refreshed and relaxed!

Room Tip: Although the presidential suite is amazing, even the one bedroom suite will comfortably accommodate...
