“Very nice property”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2013

I was here for a conference and it is a very nice property. It is at Fashion Island, so there are plenty of shops and restaurants. If you want to get to other amenities, such as the beach and pier, you need a car, but this is Southern California, so that's not unexpected. The hotel service is outstanding; everyone is attentive from check-in to housekeeping, to bartenders. The room was a decent Marriott room, with nice bed and bath. We had a high room facing west, so we overlooked the golf course and ocean. There also are options for overlooking the pool areas, so you might ask for what you prefer. The food and drink were good, although pricey, so you might want to go to the Fashion Island for meals and drinks. I was able to enjoy the pool area on my last day, and it was very nice. The pool is quite large for this type of hotel and had a nice pool bar. There is a "rose garden" for special events and we used it for our convention meals and reception. One note -- there are conventions in this hotel, so if you are on vacation, be prepared to mingle with business people with name tags. Overall, I recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms have different types of views, so ask for what you want.

The room in the was very clean and comfortable. The hotel was busy with a lot of activity on the ground floor. It is a short walk to the mall where there is a nice choice of restaurants. I could hear people in the surrounding rooms which was unexpected. The view of the ocean wasn't exciting as you saw mostly roof and machinery. Parking was convenient. There is a Starbucks on site, but it was either under stocked or closed early. It is not convenient to the beach or seaside towns. You can get to Balboa Island pretty quickly, but it is a long convoluted route to the beach. I was glad I was there on business instead of vacationing.

I have stayed at this location many times and I admit to being constantly disappointed. The "ocean view" rooms in the North tower are narrow in their view and you would never know that yo are looking at the ocean because it is so far away. The North tower is a long walk to the lobby. The concierge lounge is closed on the weekends. The beds are a disgrace..every bed that I have slept on at this location needs to be replaced. They all have soft spots and are older.

Room Tip: avoid the North tower unless you like to walk

Overall we had a nice stay. Excellent service and a decent location. Very convenient to a mall across the street. The room was okay, but clean. The bed wasn't the greatest. My biggest complaint was that we could hear the guests walking above us, and guests walking outside the room in the passageway. Even the fountain was easily heard through the door. A bit lacking in privacy.

The hotel has some good features, like the pool area where there are lots of padded chairs and heaters but, overall, it just seemed a little tired and, although the public areas have been modernized, the bedrooms themselves are uninspiring. Self parking at $21/night seems totally outrageous with valet parking $4 more. Maybe Marriott doesn't need to try so hard at an upmarket resort like Newport Beach but I would certainly be looking elsewhere if I was vacationing in that area again!

After reading some of the previous reviews, I agree this is an older hotel geared mainly to business people. However, it is the staff that makes this hotel great. We were treated like royalty during our stay. Definitely worth a second look. Would stay there again.

Working my way up the coast, my third night on the road was in Newport Beach. Staff here was ultra helpful and friendly . . . they happened to be having the Taco Bell awards the night I was there.

Had a great view of the Golf course and the coast . . . room was nice. Concierge lounge had some neat different apps . . . all in all a place I would stay again when in the area . . .
