“These folks also do the Newport Beach Holiday Cruise”

My husband and I took this tour at 5:30 pm on our wedding anniversary. As suggested we arrived an hour early. We went to the Newport Lnading office and they said we needed to go to the opposite end of the boulevard to check in. We did so and were told to go around the corner to board the boat at about 5:20 pm. (it was very cold outside). We went there at about 4:45 and were about number 10 in line. At 5:20 a man came by and said you cannot line up here you need to go back around the building and line up behind the sign. When we did this we became about 50 or 60 in line after standing in line for over a half hour we were put behind all these guests that arrived much later than us. Of course there were no seats left for us inside, approx. 16 inside seats. We left late and came back early. The lights on the homes are beautiful but Newport landing has nothing to with the decorations. I recommend if you want wine, drink beer instead. It is in the bottle and you have pretty good idea of what you are getting. The wine is terrible. The narration, or lack there of, was almost none existent. The music was not holiday oriented and did not fit with the theme of the trip. No holiday music at all. There are other cruises that offer this at the Holidays and I highly recommend you check those out before wasting your money on Newport Landing.

We decided to do this last minute before we left CA and it was one of the highlights of our trip. Perfect weather, didn't get to see any whale but plenty of dolphins and sea lions. The boat got a lil crowded but not unbearable and can also get a lil rocky so keep that into consideration if you get sea sick. Overall it was a very relaxing boat ride. The captain doesn't talk much unless he sees something. We used a $15 coupon so the price was reasonable. They also have binocular you can rent... Oh and make sure to make reservations!

“This was better than i had ever hoped!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2012

My wife and I were kind of skeptical of actually seeing any whales in late August, but we got a great deal through Travelzoo.com, so we decided it would be a fun few hours on a boat. Just out of the harbor we came upon a pod of small dolphins (about 30 or so -i think they were Pacific White Sided Dolphins). The dolphins played around our boat for about five minutes and the captain stopped the boat so we could all watch them. We decided that even if we didn't see any whales, these dolphins were worth the cost of the trip and we were having a great time! about an hour into our 2.5 hour tour we were all getting the feeling that we weren't going have any success in seeing a whale. Finally the scout spotted a water spout about half a mile away. The captain got us pretty close to this blue whale. We stayed out longer than the captain had probably planned, but he wanted us to enjoy this experience. We started heading back to the harbor and another whale was spotted not far away. We got to enjoy this whale for a few minutes until he went under for an extended time, so we continued back. Within a few minutes we saw another pod of dolphins and then a third blue whale! This whale stay around long enough for some great photo opportunities and capped it off with his fluke waving at us! Our trip lasted a little longer than planned, but the captain did a great job of making this an enjoyable experience for us all.

I can't say that every trip will be as successful as ours, but my wife and i could not have enjoyed ourselves more! Great job Newport Landing!!!

“The Worst Whale Watching Trip Ever”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 27, 2012

We went a trip this past weekend and the boat was about 45 mins late coming back from a earlier trip. So we thought we would get are trip extended but that did not happen. As we got about 15 mins to look for whales and then the captain said it was time to go back. This was the worst trip i have been on. As the people in the office are rude and know help at all.

“Fun excursion for the family”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2012

We went there on a Sunday in July. We arrived an hour early as directed by the sales staff. The office was not ready for us and we waited about a half an hour for tickets. Then we waited for the boat to be ready. We managed to get out on time and went out about a mile or two from shore. We saw plenty of Dolphins and Sea Lions, and a couple of seals. No whales. Drinks and snacks are EXPENSIVE. Bring your own snacks, and don't rent their binoculars. Get the coupons online and it will be 50% off. That is the only way it is worth it.
