Description: Located on a non assuming strip mall on Newport Blvd at the beginning of the Newport/Balboa peninsula near Lido, this is a cozy French restaurant family owned and operated since 1998. The sitting is casual yet elegant with tablecloth on the table. Authentic French menu a la carte and prix fixe menu as well. Nice wine list of mostly French wines.

It's intimate, it's quiet, and it's the best food you will have outside of Provence. Don't be dismayed by the exterior - the strip mall hides one of the best-kept secrets of Orange County cuisine. Not only will the owner be your host, but he and his staff will guide you through a lovely trip through their latest renditions of Provence cuisine. Portions are hearty, the wine list is spectacular and their specials highlight fresh local foods made to provencal standards. Especially quiet on weeknight. Parking difficult on weekends. Summer crowds make it worse. (but don't let the tattooed skaters next door scare you away!). No children's menu.

Whenever we hear about a good French bistro we have to try it and so while visiting Newport Beach we went to Pescadou. It was a delight and brought back memories or our many trips to France and the Loire Valley (which is where the owners are from originally). The big problem with dining at Pescadou is deciding what to eat. With lamb and rabbit and sea bass on the menu it's a difficult decision but my wife had the moules-frites and I had the cassoulet. They were both outstanding. This is a family owned and run restaurant and it was filled with locals. Quite frankly it felt like a familiy reunion and we had been invited too. If we lived in Orange County, we'd make Pescadou a top priority whenever we wanted French food. It's that good.

This was our third visit in several years. My husband ordered a green salad and then the rabbit moutard, which was very well-prepared. It was brought to the table in a heavy lidded pot and served onto the plate. I received a half-order cassoulet, also served in its own baking dish and covered with crumbs. Inside were a few slices of flavorful sausage, and some shredded duck leg. It was a perfect size and not overwhelming. We had great aperitifs: a "parfait amour" which I have never seen on a menu, not even in France. It was champagne with violet liqueur, divine! And my husband had a kir. Dessert was a heavenly, fluffy ile flottante (floating island made of merinque and almonds and cream). Our server was Parisian, very helpful, friendly, prompt and knowledgeable about wines. I wish this little bisto were in our neighborhood. We need such a place badly!

Food is authentic and quite good. Wine list offers very good wines at fair prices. Service is slow unless you are a local... Not sure I would go back.
