“Good Food - bad smell”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 29, 2013

Love the food at Roy's but we were seated in their very cute add on room and it definitely definitely smelled like mildew. They moved us and said other people had complained before because the room was "older". I just think when getting $150 for 3 people to have dinner - it would be possible to correct a possible mold or mildew problem that people have complained about.

“Good Food but Bad Service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 9, 2013

It's been a couple of years since we visited but the food's still quite good, including the vegetarian prix fixe menu & pork chops. The chocolate souffle was very good & we appreciated the chef changing the vegetable mix on the vegetarian main course.

The only complaint was the food taking a very long time to serve; the server only told us that they time all the dishes to come out when we were ready, which we estimated took 15+ minutes between servings. By this time, the food has begun to settle in our stomach & our 2 course dinner for most in our party (3 course for 1 person) took 2 hours to complete. The server didn't bother asking whether whether those not ordering appetizer would like to have their main course served directly & we didn't have any idea that the food would take that long, especially as we arrived at 9 PM & most diners were just finishing their wine & desserts.

“Not impressed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 5, 2013

This was our first time to dine at Roy's. I guess we were expecting more from all the hype written about this restaurant. It was extremely noisy on this particular night. We couldn't even hear each other over the din. Our salads were very good. My husband had the Asian pear salad and I had the BLT. My husband had the Ahi and liked it. I had the Mahi Mahi smothered in a lobster sauce which was awful and overpowering. My husband tasted the sauce and said it was "off." The dress code listed for this restaurant was supposed to be "business casual." Shorts and T-shirts are not considered business casual. I've seen better-dressed customers at McDonald's. If there is a dress code, it should be enforced.

“Hawaii Flashback”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 19, 2013

We have eaten in different Roy's in Hawaii.
We stumbled across the Roy's while in Newport Beach.
Our food was excellent. The butter fish is a great choice if you like rich and powerful flavored fish. Our service was great.

This is the type of place that a group of friends can go and spend a couple of hours. Roy's will take care of you. It is easy to overeat in Roy's. They have great deserts also.

“So So”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2013

Roy's seems inconsistent in terms of the quality and service. I've been there several times and have had good nights and not so good. Most recently went in for a late dinner and the server was not very friendly. The meal felt like it was just thrown together and frankly didn't taste much better than something I could have ordered from a PF Changs for half the price.
For an upscale Hawaiian themed restaurant they should do better. I think Roy's is a chain that has gotten too big and sacrificed quality as a result.
