“Great seafood restaurant in Newport Beach”
Reviewed March 17, 2013

This was my second time at Fly N fish Oyster Bar and Grill in Newport Beach. Both time I went here I went with family members. The restaurant itself is small and right on the water although only a couple of the tables have an ocean view. On my last trip I ordered the seafood chowder and a seafood dish Chad the waiter recommended. Both were very tasty. The food here has always been really good and the service is good too. If you're in Newport this is probably the best restaurant by the Newport Pier.

“Boogers near the end of your meal?”
Reviewed March 16, 2013

What a great place, great drinks, good food, nice people and near the end of the meal, the bartender Bob had boogers hanging all the way down to his lip. We had no more appetitite after that. Emailed the owner that night to let them know that this guy seriously needed a kleenex and email...ignored. Lol. Great place up until booger bob, while making drinks, turned to look at us and ask us if we needed anything else while he had a huge green stream to his lip hanging...he stared at us while he asked...and at that point...we were done with our meals. Any desert? No thanks lol. He proceeded to cut celery with his bare hands after wiping his nose on his sleeve. Ugh. Maybe we were the first people to have had the pleasure of having this happen here. Lol.

“Memorably fresh seafood in a casual and friendly place”
Reviewed February 3, 2013 via mobile

Boy, were we blown away by last night's dinner at Newport Beach's Fly 'n Fish! The last time I had enjoyed seafood on a night out was at the storied La Bernardin (3 Michelin stars and top Zagat award) in NYC. Mind you, I do not mean to imply that a casual, neighborhood place such as Fly 'n Fish is anywhere near the same category (or price point) as the rarefied La Bernardin. What I do mean to say is that the insanely fresh oysters, sea bass, and halibut; and the delectable manner in which chef Julio prepared them was so well done that it conjured pleasant gastronomic memories. It is obvious that that Rick and the other owners are fishermen who acknowledge the importance of utter freshness when enjoying seafood.
The ambience is beachy, casual, very friendly and upscale; not at all funky like its neighbors. It's not cheap, but very reasonable for the quality. It's a perfect place for dinner out with friends or just a post-beach beer and oyster shooter(with optional pepper-infused vodka) at the bar. Try it out.

“Nice Ambiance, Decent Food”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

Seven of us went for friend's birthday dinner. Fun time, average food. Service was good, but a bit odd how our waiter would bring food items (soup and dessert) to the edge of ouur table and then have us pass them around to the right person.

The clam chowder soup was served in a coffee cup... what's up with that... and the broth was much too thick. Could have eaten it with a fork.

Halibut, my date's entree, was very bland... nothing to it... and the vegetables and rice came on a separate small plate. It was a bit backwards. The smallish sized filet of fish could have been placed on a small dish and the nice sized portions of veggies/rice could have been on a larger plate. Bottom line, all items placed on the same plate would have made a better presentation.

My seafood pasta was good, but the red sauce had a bit of a pink hue to it. Not sure why... perhaps some white wine was in the mix?

It was Restaurant Week and the featured dessert was bread pudding. Not my thing, but it was tasty and the decaf coffee was excellent.

Nice ambiance, decent food... nothing grabbed enough however to want to race back.
