My wife and I were craving Italian food last night, so we drove to Balboa Island and wandered into Barolo By The Sea. The restaurant offers an intimate, but family friendly, atmosphere with an attentive wait staff. We were greeted and served by Eldie who treated everyone in the restaurant as if they were her family members.

My wife ordered the pasta and vegetables with spicy tomato sauce (which was truly spicy) and I ordered the meat lasagna which was one of the best I have had at any restaurant.

All main meals come with bread and salad. Meals are priced around $15-$20/plate.

There is one table outside on the sidewalk that can seat two, so if you want to feel a part of the street scene then reserve this table.

We will definitely return with friends to have another great dining experience.

We were cruising Marine Ave. looking at menus for lunch when the sausage ravioli on the specials board at Barolo By The Sea caught our attention. The menu is very interesting, not just full of the usual suspects from a chain Italian restaurant. The bread is homemade daily and is to die for. The homemade ravioli was pronouced "excellent". The grilled salmon was perfect and the fresh mozzarella on the Barolo Salad melted in the mouth.

I visit Newport Beach every January from Washington State and never miss goiing to Barolo for Spegettii with sausage. I sit at a back table, ask for low lights and candle and order one of the best meals I will have all year. If you don't live on Blboa Island it is well worth the trip to this little gem of a restraunt.
