Marriott's Newport Coast Villas
Ranked #3 of 18 Hotels in Newport Beach
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 19, 2011

We recently stayed at the Marriott Newport Coast Villas for a weekend wedding, and wished we could have taken advantage of the many amenities that the resort offered!

I should start by stating how accommodating the hotel staff were with us from the start. We thought the wedding was going to be cancelled three days out from the wedding, so we called and were able to get a full refund. Then, the next day we found out that the wedding was BACK ON! We had received a very nice discounted rate before, but we could not find that special rate on such short notice, so we contacted the hotel directly and they generously offered our original reservation/rate price that we had previously reserved.

We arrived very late for check in and the front desk representative was extremely welcoming and courteous. We were pleasantly surprised to have a room with a view in the 3800 building. The property was very well kept, lots of landscaping and fountains -- very attractive.

The room was enormous and very modern/updated, clean, like a very nice furnished apartment. We had plenty of room for us and our four children (ages 10-14) -- two slept on the queen bed in the spare bedroom, one slept on a sofa bed in the spare bedroom, and one slept on the sofa bed in the living room while we had the master bedroom suite. Two large bathrooms -- master bath with two-person shower, large soaking tub, definitely home-away-from-home luxury. Sheets were very comfortable ... bedding and decor updated. Roomy eating area, outdoor balcony with eat area, kitchen with full size fridge, dishwasher and even a washer/dryer.

The room was very quiet and everything in working order.

This is a vacation time-share place ... so they only provide the minimum on the travel sized lotions/soaps, etc. -- no conditioner or lotion -- just shampoo and soap -- and only one bag of decaf coffee. Just be sure to bring your own. When we called to request these items, we were told they were available for purchase in the hotel gift shop / coffee shop.

We did not have a chance to use the swimming pools, golf, putting, exercise, restaurants or any other facilities, so cannot review any of that ... but they all looked very nice.

The location was wonderful. It is not directly ON the beach ... but could be a short bike ride or walk down the street, cross Pacific Highway 1, and then into the Crystal Cove state park area and down a hill to the beach. We drove the 2 minutes it took to get there and parked and walked down to a nice little uncrowded beach area -- not a typical "public beach" with volleyball, games, lifeguard,e tc. -- just a private, quiet little beach that is more untouched by humans other than the occasionally jogger on the beach. I believe the hotel is located close to Laguna beach, which would be more public with restaurants, boardwalk, etc.

Location is also very convenient drive (maybe 10-15 minutes) to Newport Beach and Balboa Island -- which we spent 1/2 day exploring and thoroughly enjoyed the little shops, boardwalk and quaint (but very expensive) beachside homes. We enjoyed a frozen banana, some taffy candy from the candy store and then back to our hotel to go to our wedding.

I would definitely recommend this hotel/resort for large families or even as a romantic getaway for couples. I wish that we could have stayed longer!

Room Tip: rooms on upper floors have better views.

Stayed in a well appointed 2 bedroom condo. Full kitchen, dining, living room. 2 bedrooms, 1 king, 1 queen. Queen room had a pull out sofa (twin size) and living also had pull out. 2 bathrooms, master had very large walk in shower and separate garden tub. Nice patio, overall decor and cleanliness was great.

Some units face the ocean, ask for an upper floor. Many of the buildings don't have elevators. It is a very hilly resort, be prepared if walking to climb a lot of inclines!

Pros:
Very well appointed condo's, good if you want larger accommodations. Full amenities including washer/dryer.
Nice area, need a car to get around the local area and beaches
Gas grills available for use
Daily maid service
Playground, basketball court, pools

Cons:
Location - for the price, it is questionable. It is not on the beach, though they offer shuttle service to local beaches
Service - Not up to par (activities/amenities) with other Marriott resorts. Lack of communication with staff, overall helpfulness and quality of services provided (fee for most things).

I would recommend this on accommodations only, but for service, location and price, I would not stay at this resort again.

Room Tip: Many of the rooms face the ocean, ask for a room facing this direction. Also -the parking level is...

We recentely attended a wedding at Palican Hills resort. Which is wonderful. We opted to stay across the street at the Marriott Coast villas, I was so impressed with the units, the courtesy of the staff and the lay-out of the villas. Each had fully furnished kitchens, courtesy coffee, dining room, living room and two completel bedroom suites.. It could easily accomodate a family of six, extremely well. My suite had a large walkin shower, a sunken tub and the most comfortable bed. The othr suite had its own bath-room and lovely bedroom. Three TV's in the unit and also balcony sitting. It was a great surprise and a terrific price. It['s location is perfect, close to Crystal Cove, Laguna and Fashion Island. Lovely grounds and close to the beach. It was a real treat and I will certainly go again.

True with other reviews--you MAY hear someone above you--but otherwise very quiet. fabulous views and location, nearly all villas have a view. Also the bbq grills convenient to each villa so you can buy some meat and through on the grill for a quick meal, Trader Joe's just down the highway 2 miles to get the supplies you need. Fashion Island near with lots of restaurants for meals. No need to drive too far to find something to do.

Room Tip: ask for ocean view

While this place is beautiful it is like a large apartment complex with a really great pool. The rooms all have 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and are quite nice. The hotel also offers shuttle services to various beaches and shopping areas. If you get back late, and you are driving, good luck finding a parking spot. It's all first come first serve and the grounds are extremely large so it can be a hike to one's room. Nothing is within walking distance so leave your car and take the shuttle to avoid parking issues.

This place is beautiful. It has a very comfortable feel and the villas are great! The bedrooms are spacious, clean, and so comfortable. They have a big screen in each room and every necessity that you need. The bathrooms are clean and big. Master bath had a double shower head and plenty of room. The housekeeping worked hard and fast. Front desk fulfilled our need for extra coffee and made sure we had it right after we requested it by bringing it to our room. There is plenty of parking and a parking garage. Didn't use the pool but I'm sure it was nice. The location is nice, in between Laguna Beach and Newport Beach. Overall, this place is excellent and I would definitely recommend and return. No complaints at all!!

We are timeshare owners at another resort and this was our 2nd time staying here. We lucked out the first time we stayed here and had a full on ocean veiw that we were able to watch gorgeous sunsets from.. Guess you can't always be so lucky. This time they tried to put us in building 1100 that is right by a pool but with absolutely no view. The nice gentleman at the front desk (can't remember his name but he was training someone and I think he was a front desk lead) made a call to see if there was another room avilable. We ended up with a room that had a view of a canyon and the beautiful, very large and expensive homes on the other side. If you stepped out onto the balcony and stood over to the left hand side, you could see the ocean. It was very quiet. We were fortunate that the people above us were quite and while we could hear their footsteps at times it was never anything unbearable.

The room itself was said to be in a newer building. It was clean but could have been cleaner (still some food on the floor from previous guest). I would have vaccumed but all they give you is a little sweeper type thing and a broom to clean the floors. If you stay the week through a timeshare exchange there is no more mid-week cleaning. I understand that everyone is trying to save money these days but it just seems like the units would stay in better condition if they keep them cleaner. The wood on all of the furniture was really dinged-up, not quite sure how that happened. Made the place not feel as nice.

As previous reviewers have said, this place is on a hill and very large, with lots of steps and hills when walking around the property- so people with mobility issues might find it hard to get around. It is a very beautiful property. We did use the main pool which is heated and found the temperature to be nice and it was clean. I won't get in a pool if it is too cold and I could walk right into this one. We did use the the grills (which are outside of every building) a couple of times and they do keep those clean. We had a drink from the bar one evening and while it was good, it was pretty expensive-$10.00 per drink. Go during the happy hour time and I think they are about half price. My son played some games in the game room, which was fun, but be careful because sometimes the machines eat your money. You can get it back at the front desk. Someone mentioned that they didn't do Disneyland, because it might be too far away with traffic. We went to the Discovery Center and an Angels game which is right down the street from Disney and it is only about 30 mins. to get there and the traffic was not bad at all.

Would we stay here again? Yes, it is a nice resort. We did enjoy our stay. I just wish the room was a little cleaner upon arrival.
