This is a wonderful way to see Newport Bay from a different perspective. You gather at the Newport Aquatic Center in the Upper Newport Bay. Guide and trip leader Danny Hough gives some basic instruction and safety information, we gather our life jackets, glow lights and paddles and then down to the shore.

We have a choice of single and tandem kayaks, all in very good condition. In a matter of minutes we're on the water and heading toward Balboa Island. Fish are jumping out of the water making playful splashes. Sun sets while we're on the water and we paddle on as we wait for the moon to rise. About an hour after we launch we land on a beach near Main Street on Balboa Island. A short walk along the boardwalk and we're munching Balboa Bars and Frozen Bananas. Quintessential summer treats.

We meander back to our boats for a 2 mile paddle back to NAC, but taking a different route so we see other views. When we're near home base the entire flotilla stops paddling and just drifts, listening to the sounds of the night and watching the moonlight shimmer on the water. It doesn't get much better than this.

Kudos to Danny and his team of volunteers who keep everyone safely moving along.

My husband and I had a blast! The 3+ hours tour took us to Balboa Island. The stars and moon shown brightly. It was a magical scene on the water. So much fun. A perfect evening! We picnicked at the aquatic center before getting in the kayak. Our paddle tour stopped on the island for coffee and treats and we headed back to the Back Bay Aquatics Center, little flickering lights from each kayak guiding us under a bridge and through the bay lined by beautiful homes, lit like sets in a theatre. .Danny was and informative and responsible guide. This is a must for out of town guests and locals alike.

I went to kayak in the back bay this past weekend. Compared to many of the other places nearby that also rent kayaks, I thought that the aquatic center was as good as it gets. They're very relaxed about the kayak rentals and they're very good with customer service.

They charge $15hr for a single and $20 for a double, which is slightly more expensive than other places, but it's worth it because you're so far in the backbay. Getting here from balboa island would take an hour at least, easily. Here you get to actually explore a lot more of the nature preserve, which is what it's all about.

Anyhow, check out my photos from my link and go here to kayak!

Danny's tour is excellent. A great event to do on a summer evening, get a little kayaking in before a late dinner or drinks in Balboa / Newport.

A nice two hour kayaking your. Not too short, not too long. Fun sea kayaks that are leisurely and tip-resistant.

Super fun and a nice exercise / outdoor-centric night out.

Had a fantastic time with Danny and the Newport aquatic center's volunteers!
I have lived in Newport for 10+ years and can't believe it took me this long to really experience Newport on the water.
Would highly recommend this adventure to anyone. Note it can get cold and you will get wet so plan accordingly!
