You're on Balboa Island: A five star sand bar in the middle of crowded southern California, an hour from Disneyland. So what is fun, cheap, and historic? The Balboa Ferry, of course. For a paltry sum you can ride a classic wooden three-car ferry, built in 1955-57 and get a great view of Newport Harbor. Take the kids across to the Balboa Mainland, ride the Ferris Wheel, and if money is burning a hole in your pocket take "The Flyer" to Catalina for the day. All of this will be very memorable.

Took a group to Balboa Island for a fun day. Part of the day was a quick tour on the Balboa Ferry. I've used the ferry dozens and dozens of times to go from the peninsula to the Island or the other way, but this time it was just for the fun of riding on the water. The staff of the ferry were so helpful. There is a ramp so that the wheelchair could easily roll on board. It's one dollar each way. We each paid for a round trip ticket! What fun traversing Newport Harbor. We saw yachts, pontoons with dogs on the front, and paddle boarders. It was fun playing local tourist.

A quaint little 3 car ferry, great way to go from one island to the other. Cost us $4 for the car and an extra passenger. It is a short trip and only takes a few minutes but we really got a kick out of it.

We cruised from Balboa Island to the peninsula on our bikes. Only $2.50. Easy on and off with no waiting.

It was a fun experience to do it the first time, but I would like more room for bikers and pedestrians. It was a very outdated ferry and I was very nervous with my young children sitting on the sides less than a foot from cars.
