“Fun to ride with little kids”

Balboa Island Ferry

This car ferry fun with small children as part of a day trip. I suggest parking car on either side and riding the ferry as passengers or with bikes. Trip is only a few minutes but there are nice walks on either side. One the western end, the Balboa Penninsula, there is the gorgeous ocean beach, a few dippy rides, snack bars, boat rentals, etc. On the Balboa Island side are waterfront walks along the bayfront promenade which circles the island. Stop off on Marine Ave for restaurants, shops, souvenirs, toys, and for kids- the fire station where the friendly firefighters often park the truck outside for viewing and maybe a chance to sit in it. There's a restored antique firetruck on view inside. Also a nice restaurant one block from the ferry on Balboa Island- Park Ave cafe. Outdoor tables, inexpensive, very nice people, they let dogs sit on patio with you.

This is one of my favorite things to do - visit the Balboa Fun Zone, take a ferry to the Island, grab a cup of coffee, walk the island, enjoy the home, people walking with their dogs, and ocean and then take the ferry back over. Beats trying to find a parking spot on the island and their is just something special about spending a Sunday morning down by the water.

No waiting for us, the only car on the ferry. a short ride, but an enchanting way to get there. Easy to find from Hjghway 101. parking was another story once there.

We visit the area frequently and take the ferry between the island and the peninsula when we go for walks or to take a 'shortcut' home. It operates 365 days a year, reasonable price, can involve a long wait in summer for cars as only 3 fit on each ferry.

We have gone on this ferry numerous times and never get tired of it. It just feels good to smell the fresh sea air and look at the beautiful homes on Balboa. After the ferry ride we love to just to drive the car around the island. We plan on doing this again soon.
