We are currently staying at the Pelican Hill resort in Newport Beach, CA. We have a bungalow overlooking the Pacific Ocean. I was hoping for a room that faced the afternoon sun which #227 has just this plus the view. It is very nice. It has a nice large deck with lounge chairs to catch some California sun. I have walked down to the Crystal Cove State Park each morning for a very relaxing walk on the beach. The park is located exactly 1 mile from our bungalow. The walk back up to our bungalow is all up hill but it is a good workout.

I mentioned to our bartender at the Colieseum bar that our mini fridge in our room was in need of getting restocked and i asked him who I should call for this. He immediately took it upon himself to call for us and take care of it. When we returned back to our room later that afternoon, the mini bar was restocked and we were happy.

Randy at the Concierge desk was very helpful in making dinner reservations for us. He was very professional and took great care of us.

We have stayed at the Ritz Carlton's and Four Seasons but I would have to say that I like Pelican Hill the best. I love the intimate quiet rooms and that we can park our car right outside our door.

If you are debating on staying here or not... just go and book it. You won't regret it.

This is a magnificent property and the service levels on the property are very good. The only thing I would advise is to keep expectations in line when booking an "OCEAN VIEW" room. We were assigned room #104 which is closest to the top (right by the entrance gate) and thus the view is at best, a partial ocean view (in the distant corner).

When we commented back on the website comment form, we never heard back. Finally, upon receiving numerous promotional emails, I finally had to call and ask why we never heard back from the comment form which was submitted TWICE.

No real good answer. They apologized...offered us an upgrade the next time we chose to visit.

Just keep expectations in line when it comes to the view. They don't categorize their rooms as partial or full ocean views...just ocean views.

Room Tip: Room 104 is a PARTIAL (at best!) OCEAN view...nothing at all like the website images that show full...

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about your recent visit. I’m delighted to hear that you enjoyed our Italian seaside village along the coast of Newport Beach, but regret that your accommodations did not meet your expectations. I understand your disappointment in the communication from our staff and have taken the time to personally follow up with our team to address your concerns.

Once again, I regret that your Bungalow stay was less than perfect and appreciate you taking the time to post your candid feedback. We look forward to another opportunity to serve you. Please contact me directly if I could be of assistance as you plan your next visit.

Kind regards,

Giuseppe Lama

In my travels you come across rare and exceptional sites occasionally. I wish it was more often, but when you find one - it is a treasure. The Resort at Pelican Hill is such a treasure. Simple elegance. Huge rooms with vaulted ceilings, bose speakers, huge deep bathtub and all the extras of a Fine, Fine resort. And then the staff does all the extras, such as calls when you arrive, always knowing your name, calling to wish you on your way when you leave. Every staff member went above and beyond without even asking. The view is incredible and makes your visit to the Laguna/Newport area a treat.

The Pelican Hill resort is set on a hillside rising above the Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach. The rooms are spacious with beautiful views. The waitstaff is attentive to every need and the food at the hotel is wonderful. There are shuttle services that will take you promptly to the Pelican Grill or the golf course. When at the main resort you are treated to views of the 18th hole of the golf course or looking out to the Pacific you can see the Catalina Island rising from the mist.

The setting, service and facilities make this a total experience worth repeating.

Room Tip: All rooms appear to be equally high quality and are withing walking distance or a short shuttle ride...

Just not enough positive things to say. Even without the incredible views and accommodations (large rooms) I would have provided a positive review on the service alone.

Highly suggest other hotel chains send some managers to this hotel so they can learn how easy it is to do the little things that make a difference. If you have been on a high-end cruised I would compare the service to that.

Just some minor examples of the service difference:

Personalized call at beginning and end of the stay.
An employee sees trash on the ground they walk over to other side of the road to pick it up.
Shuttle drivers say high to folks waling on the side of the road during the evening.
Shuttle driver stops and asks if you need a ride
All staff smiling and say Hello when you walk by.
Towel put down next to bed with some slippers as part of turndown.
Chocolates on bed for turn-down.
Of course high quality amenities in room (shampoo, etc)

One very minor suggested improvement: They have the nice grinder coffee machines in the rooms with bags of coffee beans that they charge $10 each for (makes about a pot per bag).

I would suggest they perhaps change to something else such as:

First bag complimentary and then a charge after that

or)

2) Have some basic cheaper coffee that is free but if they want to upgrade and pay someone can do that.

We got an amazing Hotwire rate for the resort and stayed in a bungalow king. Everything about the property is superior. Rooms are huge, 847 sq ft with huge bathrooms, great in-room amenities, and even with our Hotwire rate, they gave us an ocean view bungalow. You drive to your bungalow and park your car in front of it, which was handy for coming and going.

The pool itself is a destination, it's HUGE and one of the most beautiful pools you'll see. We loved dining in the Coliseum Grill overlooking the pool, then the golf course, then the Pacific. Even though the resort is across PCH from the ocean, sitting there and looking at it, it seems to be "right there."

Service was exceptional, everyone was so friendly and went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed.

There are two 18 hole courses on the property, a spa, the pool and hot tub, and a wonderful common area with huge living room, a great tea shop, and a beautiful restaurant and bar. What they don't have are a lot of kid things like playgrounds, which is great by me, as couples sometimes need their own oasis away from it all!

Room Tip: Ask for bungalows close to the Coliseum Grill, so it's easy to walk to the pool, restaurant and...

This is by far one of the best hotels I have ever seen. From the minute we arrived and were taken to our suite ( 2 large rooms with see thru fireplace) until we left , service and amenities were perfect. The bed linens are so comfortable; and the view terrific. Be sure to take in the spa and dining outside by the pool. Car service is immediately available whenever you call. They also have 2 bedroom villas available for rent.

Room Tip: MY request view of ocean but then ones R top of the hill are also terrific
