“We saw Blue Whales!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2012

The entire experience was great. The Captain asked us if we wanted to take a risk and try and see some Blue Whales he had heard were about or stay nearer shore and see dolphins and maybe some smaller whales - we of course took the risk and after a pretty rocky ride we found them, a mother and baby Blue Whale, they were enormous and such a beautiful sight to see! On the way back to shore we did also see loads of dolphins and some sea lions! All in all a fabulous experience with a great Captain and crew!

“Trip Report”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2012

3/4 day boat Freelance out of Daveys locker on Oct 21, 2012. Very slow trip. took 2.5 hours to first stop near Catalina. Found a few Good spots which was great. deck hands did very good job helping out everyone that needed help.
The bad points where the Gunny sacks where only watered down twice during the day and found to be dry most of the day.
2 1/2 to 2 3/4 hours out and 3 1/4 hours return. OVER SEVEN HOURS WHERE SPENT GETTING TO AND FROM CATALINA AREA AND RUNNING AROUND LOOKING FOR GOOD SPOTS.
Arrived home and found that I had Bleach spots all over my clothes due to deck crew cleaning on way back. VERY UPSET THAT PANTS, SHIRT, AND JACKET ARE RUINED WHEN BLEACH BURNS. DECK CREWS WHERE VERY SLOPPY IN THERE CLEANED UP AROUND A PACKED SHIP.

“100's of Dolphins but no Whales but a great trip any way.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012 via mobile

Nice little boat , with a very knowledgeable Captain . I have never seen so many dolphins right up the boat. My 2 year old grandson wasn't as impressed as my 28 year daughter. Well worth the money I spent with my travel zoo coupon.
But no whale!

“WORST fishing trip EVER!!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

We bought a Living Social deal for the 3/4 day "Freelance" fishing trip. First thing you need to know is that there is an additional $8 fuel surcharge/person, and parking will cost at least $12 for the day. Plus each person will need to spend $2 on a fish sac (families cannot share). The optional jackpot is $5.

The boat was supposed to leave at 6:30 but didn't leave until after 7. Then we drove forever & the staff dissapeared. After about 60 min a deckhand came out & stood on top of the bait hold and gave instructions on how to fish. He was very rude, smoked the whole time, & said that if you didn't get up and listen to him he would make sure you didn't catch any fish, then he left. I didn't see anyone helping tie on hooks & there were a lot of beginners. Eventually the more experienced fishermen were helping the rookies tie on their hooks.

We looked for kelp beds to go dorado fishing with little luck. We stopped at one bed after about an hr of driving around and the rude, chain smoking deckhand took out about 1/2 as many bait as were needed for everyone to fish. A few people had their line in for about 30 sec when the captain said there were no fish we were looking somewhere else. My husband had not even got bait yet to put his line in the water. We stopped at a second kelp bed about 30-45 min later & the same deckhand took out enough bait for everyone to get one and then left. If you are a fisherman you know that you need active bait, & you should switch bait every min or two once the bait slows down. We were all standing around waiting for more bait and the staff was nowhere to be seen. Eventually I grabbed the net and took bait out for everyone. It was ridiculous. Plus the bait was HUGE (not good). We stayed there for about 20 -30 min but we found out it was because of a mechanical problem in the boat. No fish. Then we drove for another hr & at the next kelp bed we were allowed to fish for 5 min or so. This time they took out bait for about 1/person & then told people that had lost or needed to change bait that they were not putting out any more for this spot. We paid for the bait to fish!

After we left this spot we drove for about 2 hrs to the next spot for sculpin. In the first 5 hrs we had fished for about 45 min, & that was only because the boat broke down. When we were about 20 min from the sculpin spot, 2 deckhands finally helped put on hooks and weight. They told everyone that they needed to spend $3 on a special lure or they wouldn't catch any fish. They also said you needed to get an 8oz weight for $3 (and gave ppl 6oz weights). It felt like a money grab. My hubby bought a $3 lure & it broke off after the first cast because it wasn't tied on right and they said it must have been caught on a rock. There were no rocks. Needless to say he just put a regular hook on, and he caught 25 fish with a regular hook (mix of sand dabs and sculpin). I started with a regular hook and caught a fish with every cast (all sand dabs) & then gave in a bought a sparkly hook and only caught 2 fish as no bait would stay on that lure. They insisted we use the squid and refused to let people try with the live bait. I can see how the squid probably works better but why not let people try the live bait if we have already paid for it?

One fisherman caught a beautiful large crab & the staff said he couldn't keep it but then told him to put it in the side bait tank. They kept it for themselves.

We drove around to 3 sculpin spots and the drives between the spots were minimal. So in our 10 hr trip we probably fished for a total of about 3, maybe 3.5 hrs, before we headed back to port. The trip home was disorganized. First they made the fishermen grab the POISONOUS sculpin out of their own bags and bring up their largest fish if they wanted to be entered into the jackpot. They didn't have a weight scale but instead hung 2 fish on either side of the scale and guessed which looked heavier. My fish was tied with another and they said, "I think this one (the other) might be bigger" so the other gentlemen won the over $100 jackpot. My husband was trying to get his fish out of his bag without stinging himself and was standing right in front of the deckhand and he started counting down until no one else could enter instead of helping my husband get the fish. RUDE.

They filleted the fish if you walked up & waited with your bag & then they gave you a bag. Most boats just write down all the bags that want to be filleted and then put the fish on ice until we get to port. Some of these fillets were in very warm temps for the 2 hr drive back to port & people had to hold them the whole time. We had to wait an extra 30 min outside of the docks as they could not go in while filleting the fish.

Overall this boat was unprofessional & a waste of $. We will not go back to Newport to fish again. It was not even worth the Living Social deal. The cook & the younger deck hand were friendly & tried to help, but the main guy sucked. Do NOT fish here, you wil be sorry if you do.

“Great Whale Watching, Great Crew!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2012

We had a wonderful time on the Davey's Locker Whale Watching trip. It was soooo reasonable, the crew was great, nice, clean boat, and we saw whales!!! Even if we wouldn't have, we saw other sea life, and we enjoyed all the mansions and other scenery as we left the docks. Great time for young or old....I want to do it again!!
