“Loved These Very Dog-friendly accomodations”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2008

I take my poodle Fazio on a weekend away about once a month to a dog-friendly hotel. It's hard to find truly dog-friendly lodging.
Several friends told me to check out the recently opened Harmony Ridge Lodge, Bed and Breakfast in Nevada City California. Here's what me and Fazio found on our first stay: Beautiful rooms with direct access to a large set of fenced in grounds for dog runs; room linens that included fresh dog blankets and bowls; a dog friendly beach that the owner took us to for a winter walk on Saturday afternoon, freshly baked treats for the 5 or so dogs staying there/ The dogs all assembled by an outdoor fireplace on Saturday afternoon for snacks and dogtails.

Brenda the Lodge manager is a fabulous baker.

We'll be going back for a summer dog beach weekend and I encourage you to take your dog to this very dog-friendly Inn

Nevada City, at the northern end of California’s fabled Gold Country (but only 75 miles from Sacramento) is a small year-round paradise. The town itself is a gem, combining 19th-century storefronts with art deco confections. You’ll find good eating, terrific shopping, and an impressive performing arts scene. Best of all: There’s rich history all around, from period details to the absorbing (for kids and adults) Empire Mine State Park, the center of one of the most productive hard rock gold mines in the state.

Surrounding Nevada City and adjacent, equally charming Grass Valley, you’ll find a wealth of outdoor activities: river swimming in summer, skiing (x-country or downhill) in winter, world-famous mountain biking trails, mountain climbing, trout fishing, year-round hiking, lake sailing. This happy list may not be endless -- no NASCAR nearby or gnarly waves for short-board surfing -- but I could fill a page with outdoor options appropriate for all ages, most interests, and a wide range of skill/experience levels.

I’ve been going up to Nevada City and nearby Grass Valley for decades. When I went up for my annual late-summer long weekend, I stayed somewhere new -- new to me and newly opened: The Harmony Ridge Lodge a few miles outside Nevada City on Highway 20, the beautiful 2-lane route that winds through the conifer forests east of town toward the High Sierra just 45 miles up the road. Add half an hour and you’re at Lake Tahoe.

I don’t have a dog, but I’m a dog lover and I know dog heaven when I see it. At Harmony Ridge Lodge, there’s a huge wooded expanse, totally fenced, in which dogs can roam, sniff, and romp to their hearts’ content without risk of getting lost. If that’s not quite enough territory, miles of woodland trail beckon nearby. Their human companions will find plenty to bark about too, including rooms that are uncommonly spacious, seductively quiet (What’s that? Oh, it’s the pines swaying….), and very, very comfortable. Lots of decks and patios for sitting in the sun, listening to the birds, making major progress on that novel 10 friends have recommended, indulging a glass of Pinot, or enjoying a big catch-up with family and friends.

Breakfasts in the Big House are delicious and abundant, but not over-the-top experimental, thank you very much. Also: None of that “twee,” as the English say, (meaning “overly precious)” teddy-bears-
everywhere, frou-frou excess one so often finds at B&Bs. Everything at Harmony Ridge Lodge is tasteful, warm, comfortable, touchable, relaxable, restorative -- in a word, divine – for beast and man.

Wonderful property - lots of room to roam, peaceful, private. Rooms large and well-appointed, baths with plenty of space, delicious breakfast, helpful staff. Recommend not just for weary travellers but weddings and retreats as well.

I just returned from a wonderful weekend at Harmony Ridge Lodge. The experience was spectacular. The lodge is nestled amongst the beautiful forest located just above downtown Nevada City and Grass Valley. The rooms were superb. The furnishings were beautiful and the bedding was extremely cozy. Although I didn't have our dogs with me, the lodge invites you to bring your pet. I was able to take a wonderful walk in the morning with the owner's dog, Monarch....lovely golden retriever. The staff at the lodge is very nice, helpful and accommodating. They recommended and made dinner reservations for us at a wonderful little restaurant in Nevada City. Overall, I would say this is the best place to stay in the area and by far, one of the best Bed & Breakfast I have ever stayed at. I will DEFINATELY be visiting this lodge again.

We loved the Harmony Ridge Lodge. The room was over the top beautiful, from the slate floors to the wonderful linens, I never wanted to leave the room. My dog Kelly loved that there was a sliding door where she could run outside to acres of beautiful land and boss all the other dogs around and it was all fenced in so I didn't have to worry about her. We went on beautiful hikes from the lodge and didn't need to get in the car. I could have stayed another few days, it was so relaxing. Our host Bob was so nice as well as the friendly and accomodating staff. The whole experience was over the top.

  • Liked — Dog friendlyness, beautiful rooms and peaceful atomosphere
  • Disliked — Could have used a better restaurant near by for dinner.
