We've stayed at the Expanding Light a bunch of times. It's the sort of place one likes to come back to again and again for a break from the bustle of everyday life. We always stay in Serenity House; the rooms are simple and comfortable, with twin beds; sort of like dorm rooms. The bathroom's down the hall, but that hasn't been a problem for us as the building isn't usually full when we're there.
We love the food, which is simply prepared (a theme here: simple) -- often a homemade soup, homemade bread, and an organic salad. Breakfasts are in silence, which is one of favorite parts of the day. The Expanding Light is run by a religious group (Ananda), who are followers of Paramahansa Yogananda. While they're not at all pushy and certainly don't proselytize, if you're not interested in learning about their faith, you can simply skip signing up for a workshop and take a "Personal Retreat" instead; this is what we do. The personal retreat fee is quite reasonable, and includes room and board, two daily yoga classes, and one other event (varies) daily. The rest of the time you can go for a walk, read a book, take a nap, drive down to the river for a swim..... Highly recommended for those who are looking for a quiet, spiritual break.
The cancellation policy is a bit strict; be sure to review it carefully so you understand what you're agreeing to.
