The National Hotel is by far the worst hotel that either my fiance or I have ever experienced. Had the rate been $50 per night, we would have laughed the experience off, but our one-night stay (we cancelled the second night) cost us $110.
This hotel is dingy and worn, and has clearly seen better days. The entry and lobby smelled of smoke and we were surprised at the shabbiness, but this all would have been okay had the room been great. It was not.
We went to Nevada City on a day that was quite warm, but our room was more than warm, it was stifling. The window air conditioner barely cooled the corner of the room in which it was located, and sleeping was impossible. Had the room been cool, sleeping would have STILL been impossible on the cheap lumpy mattress that felt like it was original to the hotel (built around the turn of the century). The linens and pillows only made matters worse. The only seating in the room was an antique sofa that was awkward and uncomfortable, and so dirty that we had to lay our clothing on top of it in order to sit on it.
The staff seemed not-at-all-surprised when we cancelled our second night, and we could not pack our clothes fast enough, nor step over the garbage on the back stairs quickly enough to get in our car to leave. We checked out at 8 am, never to return.
