Ok, I read the poor reviews and thought: maybe just some hotel snobs... I booked the room and the person I dealt with was very friendly and professional. Got to the hotel and seeing the lobby I started to see what we were in for. Hallways run down and poorly lit. Carpet wrinkled and dirty, wallpaper peeling, ceiling falling down in places. Our room, #55, looked liked a former managers apartment done in the 1960's, cheap wicker furniture, it looked like a flop house. No waste paper basket in room, see through and small towels, no shampoo, no pillow cases on pillows, lamps missing bulbs, vent falling out of bathroom ceiling, linens thread bare and had holes... Staff understood our complaints and said they'd have the owner call me. He never did. Nevada City is cool, but when people ask where you are staying they cringe when you say the National. I have been told Bette Davis first said " What a dump!" when she stayed there, but made it famous in the film "Beyond the forest"
Buyer beware: this place is lame, not much in the way of history, just decay.
