“in the middle of a construction zone- what river???”
Reviewed October 5, 2007

diappointing to find a hotel situated in the middle of construction. It will be another year for their neighbor to be completed so we wont' be going back soon. The River is brown and not picturesque. The older rooms smell but we went into the newer section and they seemed fine.

The hotel is lovely and nicely restored. We had booked a premium "Historic Suite" and received the key to the Captain Hatt Suite. The room was large and well decorated. It was very clean. We were initially delighted. At about 2:30 AM, we were awaken by the clanging of pots, pans and oven doors. After some thought, we realized that our suite was directly on top of "Sweetie Pies" the bakery. As you would expect, the noise didn't stop until breakfast was finished. We asked to be moved, and, the next day were told that we could move down the hall. The room was much smaller (probably a standard room) with only one tiny window overlooking the street. It was still well decorated and very clean. Apparently during the major renovation, they forgot insulation or soundproofing. We could still hear conversations and squeeky beds from adjoining rooms, but at least no bakery noise. There are so many wonderful hotels in Napa that we would not return to the Napa River Inn.

Revival of the road weary spirits & senses!
We were midway through a road trip from Wisconsin to California and back. And on the return trip by the time we got to Napa valley we were sick to the back teeth with the banality of big chain hotels (apparently 4 and 5 star establishiments). The Napa River Inn restored our senses and spirits. The Hotel reception is small but welcoming. Within the complex there are three eateries, 2 options offering dinner al fresco and a bakery/cafe for breakfast. We were located in a newer building just behind the main reception. The rooms are bright, clean and cheerful. We were on the groundfloor and though we overlooked one of the restaurants al fresco dining room we were not disturbed & slept very soundly. Breakfast was served in the bakery; a choice of fresh pastries & fruit - perfect to redeem ourselves from the excesses of the night before.
Needless to say we spent the remainder of the trip home back to Wisconsin desperately seeking accomodation to match!!! Perfect!

  • Liked — Good restaurant right on the door step of a good comfortable accomodation! Perfect!
  • Disliked — No toilet on the ground floor in the reception area! But I was desperate!

Great staff makes this a nice choice, but construction is a drawback. When we first checked in at 3 p.m. on a Thursday, the whole building was shaking. At about 4, they quit for the day, and we didn't hear them at all on Friday or Saturday. There's a lot of fencing, which ruins the views. It will be great when it's all done though.

This hotel is an older property (very well maintained) just a couple blocks from the main activity in Napa. It's an easy walk to many great restaurants and shopping. On property are several restaurants too.

Checkin and checkout was smooth and quick.

My deluxe suite was spacious with a gas fireplace and wood paneled walls. There weren't dressers, just cedar chests at the ends of the beds. The bath products were wine themed and really nice, and we had two nice fluffy robes. The tea (mighty leaf tea co) and coffer were top brands. Everything was sparkling clean.

I am allergic to feathers. After informing the front desk, I left for about an hour and when I got back, the room had been changed out. The replacement pillows and comforter were just as comfortable as the original feather products, which is hardly ever the case. In fact, the bed was divine.

Breakfast at Sweetie Pies (a cute little breakfast place) was included, and it was delicious! The quiche was the fluffiest I have ever had.

Overall, it was a great base for our visit to the area, and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

There is major construction going on by this hotel for the foreseeable future (I believe it's expected to end mid-2008). As such, it's a bit loud during the week after 7:30AM. When we asked the front desk about it on our second day, they immediately offered a discount on our daily rate. It was much appreciated and was indicative of the kind service we received throughout our stay over 3 days.

The Inn is located conveniently to walk to great restaurants in the evening and to drive to either the Napa or the Sonoma vineyards.

Breakfast each morning is delivered to your room at the time you select from the bakery downstairs (or you can eat there if you prefer). The bakery items were REALLY good and altogether plentiful for breakfast.

We'll definitely stay here again when back in town.

My husband did a lot of research on area hotels before settling with the Napa River Inn. We don't splurge much on hotels, but for us, this was a step up.

It's easy to see that the hotel itself has gone through a major renovation recently. There is definitely a bit of a quaint, intimate feeling about the hotel, but I would not call it a "bed and breakfast" feel, which I read about on another posting on this site. Our room had an HD TV on the wall, a fireplace, a towel warmer and was plenty big for the two of us. The parking lot was big enough (we never had to troll around for a spot) and the staff was very nice. Even though it was Labor Day weekend and the hotel was nearly full, we didn't hear any noise from other rooms.

If you get a package with the breakfast in the morning, it is well worth it! Sweetie Pie's food was fantastic and they gave us more than enough to keep us full through most of the day. (We'd eat a small lunch and then have a big dinner.)

While I'm on the subject of dinner, there are a lot of options from the hotel right within walking distance. (This was important to us as we didn't want to have to drive back after splitting a bottle of wine at dinner or going out afterwards.) We walked to a different restaurant each night and stopped by a few pubs/bars on the way back. (Our favorite dinner by far was a local Italian restaurant called Uva.) It's an extremely safe area and a quick walk to any number of great restaurants.

Here is the only downside that kept the Napa River Inn from an "excellent" rating. There is construction all around the property that no one had told us about. This doesn't really hamper the experience in the rooms or restaurants at night, but in the morning, the crews get going and are quite loud. The "river view" is not as romantic or charming as it could have been and our balcony was a bit loud and dustry for hanging out there much. I think the construction is scheduled to be finished sometime in late 2008 or 2009, so it's going to be a hinderance for awhile at least.

If you're considering a trip to Napa in the near future, I would still recommend the Napa River Inn. The construction didn't deter too much from the experience and the hotel is really centralized to a lot of what's going on at night. See if you can get a discounted rate to make it worth your while. :) When the construction is completed, though, it will be a fabulous destination--even better than it already is!

  • Liked — Very upscale room in the middle of everything
  • Disliked — Construction noise in the morning from project around the hotel

I booked this hotel for my husband and I, and 4 other couples, based solely on previous reviews I had read on TripAdvisor. Let me tell you, we were NOT disappointed. I had read about the construction, but it was not an issue at all. We did sleep in one morning and heard construction, but housekeeping had left us earplugs next to our bed. We popped them in and went right back to sleep. The hotel itself is very quaint and has every convenience imaginable. The bed and pillows were SO comfortable, and the electric fireplace was a nice added amenity. We stayed in room 219 and had a view of the river and access to a shared balcony, which was a great place to enjoy drinks before going to dinner (and a convenient place for all the guys to enjoy post-dinner drinks into the wee hours). Breakfast, courtesy of Sweetie Pies, was unbelievable. I have never had a complimentary breakfast as good as theirs. I would definitely stay here again, if given the chance. The location was very convenient to downtown restaurants. We ate at Celadon, Angele, (both of which are downstairs from our room), ZuZu, and Greystone in St. Helena. I highly recommend all of them. All 10 people in our group were extremely satisfied with our hotel experience, and I can't say enough good things about the Napa River Inn.
